I am thinking of making a big ole ork battle fortress but need tracks. I also have this idea for a tracked stompa, but again need big tracks. I have looked on ebay and there are lots of easy to get tracks for model tanks and such. However, if they are the rubber kind, do they paint up well or can you get harder tracks? Is there anything that I can do to make the tracks easier to paint or does anyone have a better alternative?

There's a company called Bronco that does 1/35th treads. They work well with 40k vechiels. The tracks vary on size based on the tank treads you use. They come in individual links and take a while to get the length you need. But they look great. I used them on my razor back conversion.

Daemonscape do some rather nice independant resin track units for their larger tanks. You can find them on ebay. I used them for my Siege Tank.

There's always the DIY route (especially viable in cases like these, since neatness is less than crucial with Orks), as well. Basic tracks are simple, if not lightning fast, to slap together out of plasticard, although I don't imagine they'd take any longer than piecing together 1/35 sets, link by link. More intricate designs can be duplicated using push-molds, requiring only a single master tread to be built/sculpted (although a few more are advisable, for the appropriate ramshackle appearance).

Seconded - although there are a whole lotta companies out there in the 1/35 scale tread market these days.

1:35 tracks would be fine for many 'normal' 40K vehicles, but probably too small for a stompa (something like WW2 Panther/Tiger tracks are about the same width as those of a Land Raider). Although you might be able to give the stompa double tracks, i.e. two on each hull side?

The problem with many flexible toy tank tracks is that their rubber/plastic doesn't take paint well. Some toys do have 'proper' tracks with individual track links (e.g. the tracks on Lego Technic bulldozers would be perfect) but these tend to be expensive.

If you have the time and patience, Oadie's above advice is good - tracks are a good easy(ish) introduction to push-moulding, or make yourself a pile of track links from plasticard girders and rivets (So long as they're all the same basic size, they don't have to be absolutely identical - imagine dozens of grots welding and bolting track links together).

If you give the stompa mudguards covering the top of the tracks, that will nearly halve the number of track links you need.

Also who is the guy that does the Fellblade conversions? He has some rather nice 40k based treads for superheavies and other tanks.

Here he is:

I've only seen one fellblade conversion from a guy at my local shop. It was a converted baneblade.

See if these will work for your project:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Krusher-Pattern-1-0-Tank-Treads-40-/250962993125?pt=Games_US&hash=item3a6e8f5fe5

They're 1 inch wide, same as the Baneblade.
