I haven't painted in awhile and I'm getting back into it with the new chaos models. I chose to use a modified version of the pre heresy Emp's Children scheme. I'm doing genestealer purple for the armor and shining gold for the trim.

Doing my usual black primer, I realized what a nightmare it was to paint both of those colors. So I'm here hoping to get some advice on what would be the best way to undercoat these so I don't have to do layer upon painful layer to get a good coating.

Right now I have some Armory dark grey primer that I plan to test with. I haven't used GWs new line of colors yet so I don't have a very good grasp of what works well.

You should get a good coat with only a base and and a layer using the new line of paints, otherwise you may want to consider spraying white.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Try using a base colour for the first coat, and then applying the layer in thin coats over that

You can start the genestealer purple off with a colour like Citadel Base: Daemonette Hide or, Citadel Base: Naggaroth Night

You can start the gold off with Citadel Base: Balthasar Gold, or you can add some dark brown to your shining gold for the basecoat which will increase coverage greatly and can be used for shading! (i like to do the latter)

Obviously you should prime the models before any of these steps but i'm sure you know that

I'm currently doing a purple marines chapter.
I spray black base coat, then airbrush Naggaroth Night first, then Xerus Purple, then Gene Stealer Purple. Alyway spraying in a downwards trend at steeper and steeper angles each time I change colour. Then a Druuchi Violet Wash followed by edge highlights in Gene Stealer Purple.

It comes out quite dark and deep purple, owing to the black undercoat.
Heres a quick piccy of a dreadnought I'm currently working on;

My only suggestion, besides that already given above (excellent dread dude, diggin' the purple) would be to Prime black, and use a typical spraypaint (krylon indoor/ outdoor) to help set up the purple before basing in the official genestealer purple.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

For the gold I recommend mixing Dwarven bronze, Tin Bitz and Calthan Brown in roughly equal parts for a base coat, layering with a Shining Hold, Burnished Gold and Tin Bitz mix in a roughly equal ratio and washing first with Gryphonne Sepia and then lightly with Badab Black. If you then want you can highlight with Burnished Gold, or the new Dry paint Golden Griffon, which is far more metallic looking the BG. If you want to dry rush use as is and if to paint just add water or paint thinner.

I can't help much on the purple but general, use a purple base, purple layer, purple wash, relayed and then tidy up.
