Subject: Devastators vs. Thunderfire Cannons: What's Better with Stealth?

In a Codex: Space Marine army with a lot of Stealth (i.e., Chapter Tactics replaced by Lias Issodon), what heavy support is more useful IN GENERAL, a devastator squad or a thunderfire cannon? My list is 1500, has Sternguard with GoI Librarian, two or three tactical squads; it wants to shoot a lot from cover.

Take both if possible, bolster a ruin and house your devs in the ruin. They are pretty symbiotic but if you weigh advantages/disadvantages I'd say the TFC would be a little more useful but I"d rather have a dev squad myself.

For 270 points you can have a thunderfire and 5 devs with 4ML's. bolster a ruin for 2+ saves on all of them YES PLEASE!!!!!! That's 4 missiles, and 4 str 6 templates a turn. With the thunderfire beig t7. I second the take both!!!

You should go for both if you can. If you have to choose one though, go with devs with 4 Mls.

Two units of TFC and one unit of devastators would work well. If you can't take both, simply take 3 TFC's, you can get your anti-tank elsewhere in the book.

Im a little confused how would you get 2+ saves on them if you bolster a ruin then youd be getting a 4+ maybe 3+ depending on the structure?
Also i agree with going with both I am currently trailing the same thing myself, the devastators are very usefull against flyers with there skyfire rule and putting the TFC and the devs together can be a potent combo especially in a fortification some kind with added weaponry such as a quadgun! Although the real art is making sure they remain effective throughout the game, making sure they have good firing lines throughout the game.

Issodon confers Steath, which moves models in a bolstered ruin to a 2+ cover save.

ruin cover is 4+ fortify it for a 3+ add in stealth to get 2+ ...
as others said it`s very symbiotic, the techmarine from the tfc get to fortify a ruin. to abuse this if you can combat squad take a full dev squad and split it and take two tfc now you have two squads of devs with 2+ and two tfc. this of course requires 2 ruins in your deployment zone wich is unlikely.
Of course by that point you would have sunk a lot of points in static heavy support but in higher poit games i would do it for fun...
By the way where this SC comes from? look like a fun book.

He comes from the Badab War books, IA 9 & 10. The Bay Area Open is allowing Forge World rules, including characters. Lot of cool guys there.

What skyfire rule?
If you mean flakk missiles, they can't take them.

Yer sorry I did mean flakk missiles, but under the profile of Missile Launcher it has three options for missiles as the normal 2 Krak and Frag and now Flakk which has skyfire. So i assumed any unit therefore with a Missile launcher had this missile as an option.
If this is not true please enlighten me, but this will make killing flyers a lot harder for me!

The book says that some missile launchers have the OPTION of buying flakk missiles, and so far only CSM has that option.

You must have the option in your codex to be able to take flakk missiles
.As of now only chaos has them ,and only with Havocs(chaos devastators) but if forge world is allowed, you have many more options...i believe there is a dread variant whith skyfire and the hyperios pattern whirlwind can take aa missiles of some sort...
plus many more but i know very little of forge world.
I think that one of the latest books Aeronautica imperialis is full of flying and aa units.

I think some of the confusion comes from the Army Builder program, which has incorrectly listed Space Marine missile launches as frag, krak AND flakk.
