Hello fellow 40kers. Quite a few people at the local GW shop use Imperial Guard. I'm a Space Wolves/Ultramarines player and I have a hell of a time dealing with their heavy vehicles. My main vehicle killer, a Predator Annihilator, usually dies off in the first turn. What other pieces/strategies should I employ?

Seriously. Get close. You'll be able to crush his 10 man guard squads in close combat and slowly make your way to his vehicles. While your guys are assaulting, his mean ol' tanks can't target them. There is very little that can consistently destroy AV 14 at range, and what can is going to get blown off the board first turn as he brings to bear his entire gunline on your few anti-tank weapons.

If you insist on shooting, try getting shots at the rear armor. The rear armor is paper thin on a standard russ (10), and only one point higher on a few other variants.

@ Keegan
Edit: I'm not sure if your opponent was simply lucky, or just brought enough missiles, but It still takes 6's to glance AV 14 with strength 8. My russes soak up missiles like sponges. The only long-range-anti-tank weapon I really fear are broadsides and there isn't a tau player in sight at my FLGS

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

What else is in your army? What kind of guard lists are you coming up against, and at what sort of points value?

I use 3 drop pods in my army, and Imperial guard hate it when I drop them in from of their squads and kill what ever I want lols. Heck, even grey hunters can take meltas, and just drop a pod right next to them, and BOOM! you win, well not win, but heck its easier when their tanks are dead lols.

Thanks for all the help. I like the idea of bogging down the guard with assaults, especially since that is what I originally got the Wolves for.

What I have in my army is 10 grey hunters with two plasma guns, a wolf lord, drop pod, tactical marine squad with heavy bolter and flamer, a devastator squad (not long fang) with two las cannons, two plasma and one missle, a regular 5 man terminator squad, dreadnought with 2 twin linked autocannons, Calgar and honor guard, sniper scouts, three space marine bikers, predator annihilator, and an assault squad.

What options does that give me?

Yeah lascannons can kill leman russes, but it takes a lot of shots. And unless you're bringing as many missile launchers as you can carry, most IG players will just laugh at you when you shoot them at their russes. I've watched mine soak up 20+ rockets a game and keep on trucking.

However, getting into the rear arc, or assaulting them, kills them much quicker. Don't you have some scout unit that can come in from the back edge with melta and plasma guns? Maybe you should try those OP, those will demolish russes. I believe they're called bloodclaws or something like that. All I know is they're the SW equivalent to scouts.

Here's my favorite method.

1 leman Russ: neighborhood of 150 pts.

1 Dreadnought+1 drop pod: neighborhood of 150 points.

Drop that sucker (or up to three suckers) down on the board behind a tank, fire away with the multimelta and the melta secondary gun, then if they're still alive kick the crap out of his backfield while the howling space wolves charge up the front.

Not only effective, but it makes for really satisfying battles. Drop pod SW lists are incredibly fun, I still run Ragnar Blackmane occasionally because I'm old school like that.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

In a recent game (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/480821.page) I schooled some guard tanks, artillery and chimera with a single 6 man assault squad. It was one chaplain with a jump pack and meltabombs, and the sergeant had meltabombs too. They took out a Leman Russ, two Chimeras, the two squads in the chimeras, and a Griffon.
