At around midday the Ultramarines 4th company and a small detachment of Space Wolves from the Crimson Tracks pack rallied together to make war against a legion of traitor Guardsmen.
On the side of the Emperor stood Lord Marneus Calgar, a devastator and tactical squad, a phalanx of assault marines led by Ultramarine Chaplain Acanthus, a trio of Space Marine Bikers, a Predator Annihilator, a Dreadnought Fontell and Ironclad Dreadnought Phelan and a scout squad of five led by scout Sergeant Gaius. Joining the Ultramarines for the assault was Wolf Lord Gregar and a drop pod filled with ten of the Crimson Tracks finest Grey Hunters.
Standing against them were a loathsome score of traitor Guardsmen. Lead by a Lord Commissar swayed by the power of the warp, the heretics possessed some of the most brutal artillery known to the worlds of humans. The Guard employed three thud guns, a Griffon artillery unit and a Hydra flack cannon hid behind an Aegis defense line. Also used in the attack were two Chimeras, each full of eleven Guardsmen, a Leman Russ Eradicator, two Sentinel Walkers, a quad of guardsmen riding Grox attack lizards and five terrible subhuman beasts called Ogren.
The traitor Guard launched the first volley against the Ultramarines. The thud guns laid down a terrible volley focused on Calgar and the five man tactical squad that followed him. The entire squad, save Calgar, were obliterated in the string of 12 shots the three thud guns shot. One of the nearby devastator squad lascannon operators was also swallowed up in the wide spread of the guns. The Griffon and Hydra guns also took their toll, and by the end of the shooting the entire squad of tactical marines was completely wiped out.
A group of Guardsmen, containing a grenade launcher and an autocannon infiltrated behind the Space Marine Bikers. Their volley of fire caught the bikers unawares, and they too were obliterated entirely.
The Guard’s Leman Russ fired through a crack in two buildings, and caught the Ultramarine Predator in its side. The mighty shell from the Russ detonated inside of the Predator, setting off a chain of explosions that ripped the tank apart, dissolving the heavy adamantium plating with ease. The two Chimera laid heavy fire into the Ultramarines snipers as well, critically wounding Sgt. Gaius and killing another sniper.
Fueled with rage from the death of their comrades, the Ultramarines struck back. Lord Calgar called down a mighty orbital bombardment on the Hydra cannon. The gunners in orbit aren’t as infallible as the Lord of the Ultramarines, however, and the shot strayed, landing on the group of slavering Ogren instead. Only two of the fell beasts withered under the extreme heat of the attack, a testament to their brute strength and horrible durability.
Dreadnought Fontell let loose with his two twin linked auto cannons on the infiltrating squad of rebel Guardsmen, killing two of them. The scout snipers also let loose into the infiltrators, and another fell.
The Ultramarines counter attack progressed smoothly. The Space Marine’s already superhuman accuracy was boosted by the desire to avenge their brothers. In the resulting fire, one of the Sentinels was destroyed, the others lascannon wrecked. The Grox Riders lost two of their number on their approach. In a daring bit of insertion, the Crimson Tracks Grey Hunters landed their drop pod a mere yard from the rebel’s Aegis line. After filing out from the pod, they unleashed a hail of fire from two plasma guns and 8 bolters into the despicable thud guns, neutralizing one of them. Most devastating, however, was the assault squad led by Chaplain Acanthus. The assault squad rocketed out from behind a stand of ruined buildings, landing within a few feet of the Russ Eradicator. They charged the massive tank, and both the squad Sergeant and Chaplain Acanthus attached melt bombs to the Russ’ hull. Unsurprisingly the tank exploded, the force of the blast swallowing one assault marine.
The guard rallied for a counterattack. The Grox charged towards Lord Calgar as the Griffon and two remaining thud guns targeted the Chapter Master. Unfortunately for the Guard, Calgar is not one to be destroyed in such an impersonal fashion. He took three sound hits in the shooting, but weathered the storm of bullets. Another Devastator marine was also killed from the Guard’s shooting.
Seeing targets so close to their last line of defense, the Guard unleashed their three remaining Ogren on the Space Wolves that were about to vault the Aegis line. The Wolves over watch was largely unsuccessful, save for the accurate shots from one of the Grey Hunters armed with a plasma gun.
The Wolves, always eager for close combat, unleashed a furious counter attack. They launched themselves at the Ogren, but found the foul, drooling monsters more than a match in close quarters. They wolves lost two men, and only managed to wound one of the Ogren. However they remained in combat, eager to prove their prowess against such worthy opponents.
Again the Ultramarines returned fire. In this phase Ironclad Dreadnought Phelan laid into the Grox riders with his heavy flamer and hurricane bolters, killing the charging cavalry.
The devastator squad fired into the Griffon artillery, but missed. One of the plasma cannon marines’ armor failed to save him from his overheating weapon, and he was melted on the spot.
The assault marines, under the supreme advice of Lord Calgar, split their squad briefly to manage the two chimera. Chaplain Acanthus Charged one, again unlimbering a meltabomb to stick to its hull. The assault marines that survived the Chimera’s shooting latched Krakk grenades and meltabombs to the second’s hull. Both troop transports exploded, killing multiple units inside.
In the assault on the defense line, the Wolves threw themselves at the Ogren as the drop pod’s Deathwind Missile launcher shot its short-range payload at the thud guns. On wounds were distributed to both sides, but the Wolves matched the Ogren in wounds given.
Troops spilled out of the bellies of the wrecked chimera, and both sides unleashed a wave of attacks and shots at eachother. Again, the Space Marines racked up higher kills, but in a sinister move a group of Guard used a foul power of the Warp to teleport next to Marneus Calgar. They, and all the enemies artillery focused on the Chaptermaster. His armor cracked and buckled under the horrific onslaught, but Calgar was undeterred. The next turn the Guard failed yet again to kill Calgar, but evaporated the Devastator Squad, save one lone marine with a lascannon. The Ogren again proved a viscous opponent, but the Wolves prevailed, and the remaining 4 Grey Hunters fought off the monsters, killing two of them, and sending the last one fleeing. By this point in the battle, the guard only had an unarmed Sentinel, one thud gun, the Griffon and Hydra, the lone Ogren, the Guard that teleported and the remaining Guardsmen that infiltrated. Dreadnought Fontell blew the teleported squad apart with his autocannons, and moved in, stomping the squad’s Psyker to death. Chaplain Acanthus was wounded and immobilized, along with the rest of the assault squad save for the sergeant, who moved towards the Griffon. The Deathwind launcher aboard the drop pod scored a hit against the Hydra flak cannon, penetrating and causing it to explode.
The four remaining Wolves fired on the last Ogren, but the monster weathered the attack well, and prepared to return fire and to charge. Two of the Wolves died in the counter attack, leaving only F’dred Springborn and his friend and fellow Grey Hunter Nikulas the Dark.
The Ogren engaged the last two Wolves as the rest of the Ultramarines fired into the scattered remnants of the Guard. By now the Ogren, a solitary thud gun, the Griffon were all that remained of the traitor Guard. F’dred and Nikulas wounded the last Ogren, but the monster still stood, however only for seconds longer. Wolf Lord Gregar, who had spent the entire battle charging through oncoming fire and cluttered rubble to his men, had arrived. With two swift strokes of his thunder hammer, the Wolf Lord, brought the Ogren down and crushed the monster beneath his thunderous blows. In retaliation the Guard yet again fired on Calgar to no effect, and overwatched against Gregar as he charged the crew of the last thud gun. The remaining assault marine swooped in from the air, clamping his last meltabomb to the griffon as he did so. The artillery exploded, but the seargeat, his armor now black from the char of exploding vehicles, survived yet again. Wolf Lord Gregar crushed the last thud gun to pieces, and slaughtered its crew. Dreadnought Fontell and the few scout snipers remaining picked off more of the guard infiltrators. A few survived, but it was clear the battle was won. The Ultramarines and their Space Wolf allies defeated the heretics, losing only 6 squads and key personnel to the Guard’s 16.
In light of F’dred and Nikulas’ heroism and battle-skill in holding against the beastly Ogren, Wolf Lord Gregar recommend them both for promotion. In later battles, F’dred would return as a Wolf Lord, leading the Crimson Tracks into battle, with his friend Nikulas leading F’dred’s Wolf Guard Terminator squad.
