Hey guys,
im not too up to date with the current fluff but i though a sqaud of deathwing in power armor would be a cool little addition to my current DA force. Im going with a mixed force ( DW, RW, and regular battle company marines) and i could just use the company veteran rules for the deathwing sqaud
thoughts ? Again, i though it was a cool idea
Thanks !

Fluff-wise all members of the Deathwing use Terminator armour, because the 1st Chapter is drowning in in the stuff. On the other hand, it would probably look pretty cool, so go for it

Agreed. Fluffwise, they would never be in power armor. If you are looking to maybe breakup the color scheme, paint them as a successor chapter, there is one that is a bone color (name escapes me).

That isn't entirely true.
The various Captains, etc on foot are all members of the Deathwing. Any time you see a member of the Dark Angels wearing a bone-white robe...it's because they're a member of the Deathwing.
Those inducted into the Deathwing do not necessarily stay within the Deathwing or wear Terminator Armor all the time. Look at Azrael. He's the Supreme Grand Master of the Dark Angels--heck, the Unforgiven Chapters even. If he calls them to war, they all come running.
Yet...he's not wearing Terminator Armor or any outright indicators of the Deathwing status that he held aside from the bone-white robe.

i believe that if the mission called for it that the DW would don their power armor. a group of fallen are planning an assault on a hive city, but the tunnels of the sewer are too narrow for terminator armor, What are you supposed to do ? say ''oh well ! we'll just wait for another day ''

The Deathwing would never use power armor, they have the best collection of terminator armor in the Imperium. It is also true that captains are also deathwing members, but they wear power armor. However, they are not *in* the Deathwing, they are in their assigned companies. The closest thing to non-TDA Deathwing would be company veterans.

Originally* Deathwing did fight in PA (only the Ravenwing were truly exclusive bikers / speeder pilots), and DA battle companies still fielded bikes and speeders, Fluff evolved away from that a little, making the Deathwing also exclusive users of TA (as opposed to TA only being allowed to the Deathwing, which is different and my preferred tack on it).
At the end of the day though, paint what you like, it's your interpretation of things, as long as your opponent knows what is what and/or agrees to any special rules you decide for them.
* I mean when DA went green, and the Ravenwing were invented (toward the end of Rogue Trader era IIRC).

So no, Deathwing don't fight in power armour.
But you don't have to say that your Deathwing coloured PA marines are from the Deathwing. Just say that they are a small force from a successor chapter that has attached itself to the Dark Angels so that they can achieve a common goal (finding Fallen?).

You seem to be confusing the Deathwing with the Inner Circle.
The Deathwing is the Dark Angels first company and fights exclusively in Terminator Armour
The Inner Circle is, well, the Dark Angels that are 'in the know' so to speak
All members of the Deathwing (and to a lesser extent, the Ravenwing iirc) are by virtue of their position members of the inner circle.
All the company masters were at one point in their lives members of the Deathwing (that is, they are promoted out of the Deathwing to their commands).
Librarians, Chaplains and Venerable Dreadnoughts are also part of the inner circle.
As such all members of the Deathwing are members of the inner circle, but not all members of the inner circle are members of the Deathwing.

Or you could say your DW colored PA guys are simply veterans who are filling other duties (honor guard, vanguard, leading Tact squads, etc.) until a spot in the DW opens up for them.

Or a particular squad has been allowed to colour their armour bone becasue of some awesome service they performed and saved half the 1st company or something.

Haven't played DA since the more recent codexes but the 3rd edition codex had a 5 point option to make your veteran sergeants from any squad members of the deathwing. GW even mad PA shoulder pads with deathwing emblems.
Deathwing is used 2 different ways throughout the various fluff. There is the formal organization of the Dark Angels 1st company, and then there's everyone in the chapter who has ever served in the company.
If a Deathwing terminator leaves the company to serve as a sergeant on a tactical squad then he doesn't cease to be Deathwing. He just doesn't get to wear termie armour anymore.

Belial was captain of the third company while also being part of the deathwing. His station was denoted by wearing a white robe over his green power armor. Over his left breast was a red embroidered deathwing symbol.
Pretty sure once you're deathwing, you're always deathwing. It's just not all deathwing are a member of the 1st company or part of the inner council. But of course this is taken from Thorpe novels so /shrug.
Angels of Vengeance are a Dark Angels successor and retain the black armor of the pre-heresy dark angels.
Angels of Absolution are a successor and are painted up in the deathwing colors.
I say stick to these or just come up with your own successor chapter that simply doesn't have terminator armor in as large of quantities as the dark angels so only the true inner-circle have it etc.

I think the rules are essentially bone for Deathwing, black for Ravenwing and green for Normalguywing. That having been said, there seems to be quite a bit of debate about it.
To the original poster. There are basically two ways of looking at this problem. From the purist point of view and from the hobbyist point of view. If you chose the Dark Angels because you enjoy their history and lore, then you should probably stick to it and not deviate significantly without justification. That's what you came to enjoy in the first place. However, if you chose the Dark Angels because you like the way they play, or you like their iconography, or just because you are a fan of the color green, then go nuts with it. They'll be on your shelf alot longer than they'll be on the game table, and you'll have to be more comfortable with them than your super fluffy foe.

Sergeant Naaman is a Dark Angels scout but also a member of the DW. He certainly doesn't wear TDA when leading his scout squads though! Though the current codex has all members of DW in TDA, it's certainly not crazy to make a few characters in bone white PA.

I'd say come up with a concept for the army based off the campaign they're supposed to be on. There are ten thousand cool ideas for regiments, and they'll all mesh fairly well with Space Marines of any sort. I'd think the best thing to do would be to tie them together by having a bright green spot color or some bone armor or uniforms and by having unified basing. Have fun with it.

A while back I kitted out an assault squad as a vanguard veteran squad. I kept them as da green with the exception of bleached bone shoulders and shining gold trim.
My justification is that they are first company vets seconded to a vanguard vet squad and led by an interrogator Chaplain with jump pack. Effectively they're his personal retinue. It might not be 100% fluff perfect but I felt that I could sacrifice fluff to the rule of cool god.
And those da vets above.....those helms are cool!!

In white dwarf #130, there is a whole squad of dark angels 1st company "deathwing" members in power armor. Sure that was back in RT, but I don't see why you couldn't do it for your own collection if you wanted to.
