They were lucky. They didn't tangle with New Orleans. Else Canad would be New Louis now.

Well, I don't know how else it could be viewed. America tried to blindside the British who were busy with the French and failed to conquer Canada. Today, it is remembered here as when we fought off an invading army.

The British were kidnapping US citizens. If we had Captain America dare I say, it would have been a different situation!

We had General Issac Brock and the motherfething Iroquois. They had incompetent commanders and militia reinforcements that would generally refuse to fight on foreign soil.
Wasn't fair fight really.
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

I grew up being taught the only human to die did so due to sickness. When my family used to drive through the Hainseville woods, I would look for the man's monument.

However you wanna look at it, the simple fact remains that the only two invading forces to successfully attack the Whitehouse were Canada and the aliens in Independence Day. :p

I wouldn't call it Canada more like the British Empire.

I've heard it said that in many ways the War of 1812 had to happen and yielded many good things.
Things like solidifying both Canadian National Identity as well as that of the United States (Second War of Independence).
A more adult relationship between the 3 countries involved afterwards in the "Era of Good Feelings", and now our nations have gone to war many times as allies.

That war basically established Canada's national identity, it's not hard to get why its important to them. Plus you know, when you have as many military victories as Canada you count your blessings and shout their praises.

Yeah...except not Canada. We played this game before.

I edited some of the snark out...and whats left isn't directed at you its just not worth a rewrite.

Didn't the American National Anthem come out of the War of 1812?
Also, I would say that the Americans had something of their derrieres handed to them on account of failing to secure any of their initial goals of the war, with the possible exception of killing some Englishmen out of jealousy.
And to pre-empt it the thought that the Americans came out on top at the end of the war due to their several naval victories is utter tripe, and was put forward by Teddy Roosevelt to asuage the butthurt they felt over being defeated by the British.
Yes I'm being inflammatory but gosh darnit there ain't much else we've gotten your goat on so we have to trumpet this one wherever and whenever we can.
No hard feelings are felt however, I have ancestors on both sides of the war.

Those naval victories were trumpeted at the time they happened and didn't have anything to do with Teddy. America at the turn of the 19th century was a poor backwater that attacked a globe spanning empire. Really, we're lucky we maintained out independence. If we came out on top it's because we were able to chart our own course post war, and it has nothing to do with the war or Canada.

I don't think you can ever say its only a few things really.. there's always loads of gak goes on that helps pitch in to make history, history.
You could say as well, the lacking in support for what was essentially a civil war, or the fact that Britain was at war with loads of other people. Surely the single biggest reason for maintaining independence was the Napoleonic wars considering they started in 1803? If Britain wasn't busy scrapping the not actually so little-little feller, then for sure they could have spared the man power to go mash the colonies if they so wished. I know history further back than the last 100 years is always relatively hazy with figures, but they must have lost something crazy like a half a million redcoats in all those years of scrapping surely?
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

The Napoleonic wars are absolutely the reason America isn't a commonwealth nation, and to a limited extent the 4th Anglo-Mysore and 2nd Anglo-Maratha war. The Kingdom had spent too much money at war to bother re conquering the country that started the mess that lead to Napoleon in the first place. I seem to recall some MPs referred to America as an albatross that destroyed all others who meddled there.
The figures I'm familiar with give RN deaths at about 92,000 and Army death around 210,000 nothing to sneeze at but interesting to note something like 190,000 redcoats died of disease.
I've seen numbers as low as 12,000 dead in the RN but never under 200,000 for the Army, it could always be higher but those are solid minimums.

Interestingly, the most polite nation on earth could argue its never lost a war, even including the strange Irish raids/invasions.
Except to Dallas hockey teams of course. Once again, Texas proves its utter dominance of all things ice related.
