Well, maybe I'm the only one crazy enough to use it, but firing 8 melta-pistol shots are lots of fun! So far, I've only use them via the D-Pod. But using them in conjuction with j/pack seems kind of fun too.

If I want to give the HG j/pack, should I put Dante with them, you know, to avoid scattering?

If you have any such experience, please share them with me. Tq.

The JPs cost an extra 15 points. They are more reliable in that they only scatter d6, but less in that you can more easily mishap. It's probably worth it to take them as range is obviously an issue with 6" range weapons.

I would not run Dante if you aren't otherwise using his abilities. Lets be honest; you're blowing 270 or 285 points so you can overkill something in a risky fashion. Let's not waste another 220 or whatever it is Dante costs.

If you already plan to use him (to unlock SG as Troops) it could be ok. At least then you guarantee that you get to shoot what you want. You still have the issue that you can only target one squad with the unit, and the HG is squishy enough that Dante is unlikely to deter a charge.

I think with honour guard are the best unit for Dante as they give FNP, also it means with meltaguns it means the enemy can not meat shield or hide any tank.
The only issue is you wan to use sang. guard with inf. pistols as they are scoring and going with Dante gives the Sang. guard a role to play.

I would use the drop pod approach, as you are more likely to get in melta range.
Also why so many melta shots? There are ineffective against nearly all units. Maybe if there is a unit of leman russes or a squad of paladins.
That is compared to 4 plasma guns which I think is probably the best honour guard set up, or 4melta+4flamers which is another favourite.

If you want to use inf. pistols then drop pod of 5 assault marines with melta and inf. pistol as a late game objective claimer or mech destroyer depending on what is needed would be my suggestion.

Vanguard Vets can get the same payload for the same cost.
You get a power weapon and assault after deep striking instead of feel no pain.

IMO, you get more out of the vets.

Well, it did seemed overkill, but such term doesn't really apply to me, as long as they get the job done. For the most part, its just because for sheer thrill & enjoyment. The D-pod HG sqd costs 15pts more than a normal Land Raider, so target selection is very crucial.

I remember still the look on my opponent's face when his 2 Paladins' sqd were destroyed in 1 shooting phase (I took 2 HG sqd that day)...priceless. Or when I destroyed that 6-'men' super resilient Wraith sqd..that felt really good.

But, yeah, I do realize that they are pts better spent somewhere else.

Thanks for your replies.

Wow, you have had some good luck.

It should take 32.4 Infernus Pistol shots to kill 6 Wraiths, which is 5.4 each. It takes 2.7 to kill a Paladin.

With 20 S8 shots into a 6-'men' Wraith sqd (actually it was 5-'men', 1 wraith was downed by lascannon fire), even with 3+ invul, focus firing will take their tolls.

Paladins were easier compared to Wraiths due to their invul sv being only 5+. This is especially true when the GK player became overconfident & left their precious cover. Being able to disembark 6" from the D-Pod helped a lot. My HGs & Captains (like I posted before, I took 2 sqds of these) managed to get into good range & firing positions. 1 round of 20 x S8 AP1 shots was enough to clean up the two 5-men Paladin sqds.

I don't really relly on mathhammer, cuz at the end of the day, it all depends on the dice rolls. On a bad day, I'd consistently failed my 3+ armour/5+ FnP rolls. On a good day, I even managed to hit & caused 2 wounds to Draigo from Overwatch-Snap Firing Infernus Pistols. So after each game, we (my opponent & I) usually get some soda (no alcohol allowed in the flgs) from the fridge and talked & bragged & lol ourselves about our game or dice rolls or luck..etc...

Now that I have a better picture of the situation, I guess you weren't terribly lucky.

Of course, you did spend 800 points to kill a 185 point Wraith squad.

I've also realized that I forgot how 6th changed Drop Pods. I would now change my recommendation to keeping them. You lose most of the chance of mishap and also have a much better chance of getting into firing range due to the 6" disembark. They're also cheaper and somewhat useful on their own for blocking LOS. A shame they can't contest objectives anymore.
