Beasts (like Beastmaster units, Spawns, Raveners, TWC) got boosted in the new edition: move 12'', ignore difficult terrain, move through cover, FoF.
They could be the new premium assault squads:
If such a unit is led by an adequate HQ, it can be almost untouched (thanks to LoS) in the enemy's face in turn two.

Thoughts?

Only that the baron is this adequate hq that you mentioned...

The "dies from the front" rule works against them. Also, overlook. That's about all there is to it

To be honest I think those things cause a net loss. This edition is shooty

I field them and they are awesome.
5 Khymerae, 4 Razorwing flocks and a Clawed fiend (because I converted a very cool one ^^), led by "the baron" Sathonyx for LOS shenanigans.
They are pretty resilient and can put out quite some damage at a good initiative.

I'm spreading them out at maximum distance, so they fill half my deployment zone. The sight of the deployed unit alone is worth fielding them. ^^

And for the few points they cost they certainly draw an unproportionate amount of fire.

Raveners still have to many liablilites.

1) Still strike at I1 if going through terrain.
2) No charater to take the hits.
3) T4. Not as bad as it used to be, but still.
4) Still not as fast as a spawned termigaunt.

Nevermind.

How about the steed in the new CSM codex; does it count as a beast?

Fenrisian wolves are the beasts in space wolves codex, they are amazing. (But cavalry is still buffed also).

I field them both in every game now.

The spawns in the chaos codex are beast and pretty cool.

@Enzephalon That's actually something I hadn't fully thought through. The LOS stuff is a grand plan. Do the beastmasters themselves count as characters?

From the rulebook:
- represents squad leaders - yes
- own profile, but not own entry - yes
- enhanced characteristics as compared to their unit - no? N/A?
- higher LD - yes

I can't find any clarification in the FAQ. I'll go look around the forum and see what I can see; I'm sure someone has asked this before.

Yes Beastmasters are characters, there is no need for it to be in the FAQ since they are included in the rulebook unit type definitions.

But yes Beast got a major boost this edition. Beast Packs are very solid units. To me the main attraction is that they are relatively cheap, under 300pts + a 100pt HQ gives you a quasi Deathstar unit for less than 25% of a 2k list. Its pretty much completely self contained and is fast enough to avoid things it doesn't want to engage.

Spawn in the new Chaos codex appear similar, they probably don't hit as hard as Beast Packs, but they are very cheap for a pretty solid combat unit.

What HQ would be most suited to lead a unit of Spawns?
Lord on a bike or steed?

how about something like an allies list where you take skarbrand to buff up the spawn wave? Any potential in that?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned fiends. We know flamers improved but fiends are still the most dangerous unit in the daemon codex. If you ignore them you will pay for it.
