Subject: Chaos ForgeFiend the good, the bad and the ugly
|
 |
Unrelenting Rubric Terminator of Tzeentch
In the Ring of Debris Around Uranus
|
I was cautious when the first pictures of this thing came out. I wondered how good can it be, is it just a dreadnaught that looks cool. Once I saw the codex, my mind changed. The ability to regenerate hull points with 'It will not die', 'Deamon' giving it a 5up invuln save all the time, the weapons, the armour, daemon engine rule. With these rules, I think it makes the forgefiend a great Heavy support choice. The bad points its low BS of 3, but hey I play Orks so 3 is not so bad in my mind. I think the autocannon option is the better of the 2. I just don't like relying on blast weapons and the risk of getting hot. I think the plasma cannon for the head is a nice option, it is too bad you can't take another autocannon, but it is still nice. It make the Forgefield a nice gunboat to hide behiind an aegis line to support anything else hiding back there and if they are Heavy Support, it means that big guns never tier mission they will be scoring, even better objective holder. I did always like the defiler, I just think these are a little more versitile, although the defiler having 4 hull points is pretty sweet too. The heavy support is a tough slot with competiters like the defiler, Oblits, and Havocs getting a little bump in this edition. However I think the point costs will be the most limiting factor in Chaos marine lists....I don't think the Maulerfiend is that great in that, I think it has the same weaknesses that most close combat dreadnaughts have, people will blow it off the board before it can get into CC. If it manages to get into CC it will be a beast, but as 6th edition favors shooting, I don't think it is a real viable option. Cheers all

i had alright luck running it with auto cannons just the two, it did ok but i was agents a GK strike army with dread knights, and things didn't go well, the forge did kill a lone pally and stop it from contesting my objective, i wish i had taken the plasma for the horde of lil power armor knights but hind sights a bitch. i am differently gonna play with it some more.

if he could take another autocannon he would be great. 200 points for 12 shots would be insane.
The plasmas are nice as they do not need to worry too much about the BS3, its just one inch more scatter.
The 5++ kinda sucks, you pay points for it but most of the time you could get him 5+ or better cover, so he ends up being overcosted.
the autocannons are obviously awesome but losing 12" hurts a lot. Gets them that closer to multimeltas and the rest of the other army.
I think they are ok, but not great. I will convert one up and rarely use it.

cool to see posts, I really thought that the autocannons wouls be better, but I tend to have terrible luck with template weapons... I should try the plasmas

I can't see the point of the plasma though with its 24 inch range. Just seems like if you are limiting yourself to 24 inch shooting you would be better off with a vindicator.

at least with "it will not die" it has a chance to restore a hull point each turn if it loses one.

War Walker Pilot with Withering Fire

The naked Forgefiend is pretty wicked as is, I will consider the Ectoplasma Cannons, but probably just the head upgrade, because I cannot give up 8 s8 shots. Seriously, I used the Daemonforge against another Forgefiend and got 5 penetrating hits! (very lucky rolls, but still!)
He is worth it, very cool. I'm sure some games he'll explode in a heartbeat, but such is the life of almost any 40k unit. Maulerfiends might be cool as they move 12", as moving distractions more than anything, to draw fire from footslogging infantry. But it wouldn't take much to pop them charging forward. I can see them being quite effective and scary too, though ... it's a tough call.

Auto cannons all the time for me, it's like a Psyrifleman with a 5+ save, IWND and Daemonforge, but cost more due to these things.
With the Predators and Havoks being so cheap however, it's got a tough competition.

Predators are a good choice too, being dropped in cost significantly. Demonic Possession is gold on a Tri-Las Predator ...

For the same cost you could have 4 lascannon Havocs.

I think havocs will really see more play in this edition due to Flakk and missile launchers...
I am not sold on the Maulerfiend as I think it will be wasted before getting close to anything. I am in agreement that the Autocannon is the shinotz... I just have bad luck with the template weapons, though I may take them for the head. I magnetized the head and weapons for the two I own, but as I paint everything before I play it, they have not seen action yet.

True, but they can't move and shoot, and the two targets have different weaknesses. Front Armor 13 is nothing to laugh at; it's a tossup. Havocs/devastators with Lascannons is always a tossup, as it's usually the most espensive item, I usually look for it in other places, though duly noted on the points costs.

someone did math wrong. base havocs (without extra wounds and without MoN) are 75 +20x4 for Las Cannons... thats 155.
Pred with 3 las is 140.
Demonic Possession is gold on a Tri-Las Predator ...
I would not give it Demonic Possession as that lowers the BS to 3...
Problem with Flakk missiles is they are still only S7... thats 2 or 3 hits and cost 40 extra points over missles. Heldrakes are average 3 hits... and cost 5 points less, in addion get a bale flamer/S8 Autocannon and are flyers.
My heavy Support is 3 oblits with MoN, and 2 Fiends currently. Mauler Fiend is good for that Landraider carrying Terminators. They move it up, you bust it with the fiend instantly. 4 strength 10 attacks, and then 1 or 2 melta attacks. Forgefiend, Ecto, why not Vind? because this is more survivable and has 3 shots instead of 1.
Thinking about swapping for Deffy at some point though. Depends on size of game.

Pred with 3 las is 140.
Then when you throw in Demonic Possession, It magically equals....155. So, no, My math was right.

I think it depends on what you want to do with them. I personally like to rely on more dakka than assault in 6th, so I will be going with the forgefiend over the maulerfiend...
