For all intent and purpose, deer are vermin. They're a giant rat with a cute face.

The ones you see hit by cars/dead on the road are most often yearlings, little young'uns that have been weaned off of Mama and set out to fend for themselves, naive to the world and with poor survival skills.

Which draws a lot of parallels between deer and people from California.

I'm not sure I agree with most of this. Deer are a valuable part of the Eco system not vermin unless you happen to be a corn farmer. IME, most of the deer aren't yearling based on thier size. But I also know deer vary widely in different areas of the nation. But I do agree with Californians being naive vermin with no survival skills, I walked up on a guy tagging a Hereford once. Asked him what he was doing and he said "tagging my elk" I says "cow?"
"yeah, cow elk"
"no, cow as in moo moo."
"whut?"
"you shot a cow, a bovine, and for feths sake it's red."
"oh"
"you might want to walk over the hill to that yellow house before my cousin's husband shoots you. I'll be there calling the sheriff, good luck"
My cousin got his contact info and sure as gak he was from out of state hunting on the exhorbantly expensive non res tag. I think that little error cost that guy $3000 plus whatever the sheriff tagged him with in fines.

In Maine, we had a guy that came up from some city in Southern New England that thought it would be clever to wear a deer pelt, complete with head and antlers so he could sneak up on the critters.
Someone got a surprise when they went to tag him...
The worst was here in Utah when some friends of mine on the Elk hunt encountered a group that had clearly never been out hunting before.
The people mentioned that they hadn't seen anything yet, but had gotten some sound shots off.
It wasn't until my buds got out of sight of these people that they realized what they had just said. They quickly dove into a nearby ravine and hauled ass away from that ridge as quickly as possible.

Ugh. We had an incident where we had a guy go into the bazaar we have every weekend on Kandahar and brought himself some man robes. He kept them on and he was walking out he almost got gunned down by the MP's because they saw his M4 barrel bouncing out his robes

Yea, some people are just plain stupid. Years ago, we were at a friends house just doing your average plinking. Our friend has something like 100+ acres and a HUGE pit somewhere on his land for shooting, with the big ol bank and everything for rounds to hit. So there we all were my parents, my brothers, My dads buddy that owns the land and his whole family, and we've been out there shooting for a good while. When we see this guy climb up over the bank and just jump down INTO THE FIRE RANGE and start asking "Hey what are you donkey-caves shooting at anyways?!?"

Yup. Fairly intelligent guy right there
