The Primarch Sanguinius Lord of the Blood Angels







In celebration of Forgeworld's release of Angron, the Red Angel and the Horus Heresy supplements I thought it auspicious that my Primarch conversion is complete.

Really nice work here. This is how I see Sanguinius and you captured it quite nicely.

Wicked. I'd like to see a few more red jewels to break up the gold, but overall it's a solid model and paintjob.

My only complaint is that the gold seems kind of flat. The model itself is great. Especially the wing work! Also great conversion!

Great job! Personally, I think the head is too big (not small enough for heroic scale?) but it's a great model.
How does he scale when compared to other models (say a Space Marine or something)

He looks good, but I will chime in and say I agree the gold is flat and the head is a bit big. As a personal complaint, I also think he should have his sword.

You're not getting anywhere near enough praise for this model. Having gone and looked at some WiP shots I can confidently say that your modeling skills are top notch. The proportions look fine to me, it's tricky getting them to look just right when you're trying to build a character that's a head or two taller than a regular figure, in heroic scale. I think you did a very good job.

Paintingwise, that's the best gold I've seen in ages. I don't know what would be a "unflat" gold that others want to see, yours has a lot of depth and good tone. Or maybe my eyes are weird, still it looks brilliant to me. For kicks I went and looked up Sanguinius minis on CMON, looking at 9-10 rating ones only, yours actually beats most of them. Not only modelingwise, but I preferred your colour as well.

The most important thing to me on a model like this is the wings, and you got them perfect. I really like the blade on his weapon too.

How on earth did you sculpt those wings?! Insane job. I think the gold could be a bit more radiant though.

Cheers guys. The model is getting a nice response with the common complaint of it looks too girly. The placement of the legs would naturally push the panels of the thigh armour from the body creating a false outline of the abdominal area.


A note on the model and painting.

Everybody has their own opinion in how these strong characters should be modelled and represented on the battlefield. These opinions are quite often entrenched in childhood memories and evoke quite strong reactions when presented with a piece of work that doesn't match their ideal of that character. Further to this, we all carry an image of these epic heroes at different periods of their lives. Sanguinius at the height of the siege of terra would have a different aspect to the Sanguinius of Ullanor. Not only that, but consolidating official paintings, images and textual information, when such information is on flux is a challenging process and requires a certain amount of artistic interpretation.

I have made the choices that I feel best serve the character of Sanguinius. I wanted a luminous, transcendent being that is far removed from the grudging desperation of warfare.

There is a common troupe among heresy / pre heresey armies for very dirty weathered models (which I am a huge fan of). However, for a being who can be described as luminous, dirty armour didn't seem to fit. The armour had been painted with Vallejo liquid gold and shaded with oil washes.

I thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to write a reply to my humble project and I ask that, even if you don't agree with the choices I've made, that you keep posting up in the same friendly and respectful manner.

Beautiful job, gold is excellent, that's the first thing that caught my eye.

I think the wings have too much contrast, white wings should be a blaze of white with very little contrast.

@cadbren; too much contrast to you would be to little to another poster. This is a model is open to such critiss because everyone will have thier own unique opinion on how the primarch should look. A blaze of white, although an evocative phase, would look rather dull and make the model look incomplete.

Why is half his face brown? I don't recall ever hearing about that, of course I could just be out of the loop again!
