Hi, welcome to Dakka!

Which games system you thinking? I'd probably say if you're just getting into the hobby go with the race with the models that you like the most. As for pro-painting, I've no idea. A google search would probably help more than me.

You wont. Just read a few tutorials, have a couple of little practice goes. Take your time, and stay patient.

Everyone starts at the same place, But seeing yourself improve and deploying on the table your own miniatures that you've spent time and effort on is, really, extremely rewarding.

Worth doing.

ok are the grey knights a good army, and look good painted?

They look great painted (check the gallery) and they aren't the toughest to paint well. Even a simple black spray undercoat then a few drybrush coats from darker gun metal up to a brighter silver will have them looking pretty good. There's lots of different grey knight painting tutorials, or drybrushing tutorials out there.

If you're concerned about cost then they're a pretty good choice. Because they're an elite type army with a high cost in points, you usually can't field very many of them. Meaning you don't have to buy all that many models. Certainly when compared with armies like Orks, Imperial Guard or Tyranids. Obviously there is still some expense involved, it's still Games Workshop i'm afraid but it's definitely cheaper to put together 1500pts of Grey Knights than it is 1500pts of Imperial Guard.

As for how good they are? I confess I don't have much experience. From what I understand they were very strong in the last edition of Warhammer 40k. I imagine they will still be pretty good.

Check the army list section of the forums for advice on a small maybe 750pt grey knight army to see what would would be a good way to start your army... and to get an idea of how many models you'll need to get yourself going.

ok thanks man, you helped alot!, what does was mean, is it like you paint it then put the was on after to like make the shading or what does it do and what is it?

Wash? Yeh. Often you'll paint a base colour then apply a wash (which is a really really thin paint or ink) of a darker colour into the deep bits of the mini. It's really simple but adds so much depth and definition. Probably one of the simplest but most effective things you can do.

For example, a really simplified typical Ultramarine for example might go;

1. Base coat Ultramarine blue
2. Apply a black or dark blue wash
3. Highlight with an Ultramarine Blue/white mixture. (either drybrushed or hardline highlights)

There are great tutorials around for all levels. Have a look at this for starters. Hopefully it helps;

what tools will i need?

You'll get by with a little craft knife, some glue and a small selection of brushes. That'll get you started at least.

You know if you're really concerned about money, there are loads of people selling their old stuff on ebay. You could probably pick up a couple of squads without spending too much money. You get someone elses stuff, and probably not particularly well painted but it would allow you to play a few small games. It could tide you over for a bit while you save or maybe until christmas when you could really start building your own army.

It can be a little expensive to get up and running. After you've started you can collect slowly over time. Its the best way to do it. But yeh, initially there is a bit of a cost.

You can hold off, save a bit. In the meantime, read some of the fiction, study up on some of the backgrounds, some tactics, battle reports and army lists and things. Then when you've got a little bit more saved up you'll have a better idea of what you want to do.

Actually I've only just started again after a break of about 14 years. I had an Ultramarine army in my youth. I've managed to resurect some of my old stuff and added a little more to it and am building a Blood Angel successor chapter army. It's slow going at the moment, I don't have much time, but I hope to have around 1000 points built and painted and have had a few games by around christmas time. I'm enjoying just slowly painting and modelling at the moment.

You should definately paint your models. Don't worry, you won't ruin them, any paint is better than no paint, even just silver primer on your knights! which is (sadly) what I used to do... By the way, I thought I'd be a terrible painter before I tried, but when I did, I was painting better than 60% of the guys in my area! Its not so hard.

You don't have to paint them silver, but thats the color the Grey Knights are. I've seen some pretty cool metallic blue and red knights.
