Yeah, we do play it sometimes, although mostly we just hang around in this forum doing some silly chatting.
Quite a fat attempt of trolling btw ,

Flames of War is an absolutly dreadful game.
Its full of tactics and decision making .
It uses simple and intuitive rules to deliver involving game play.
ALL the players seem to want to build convert and paint up armies to play with.
Its just far too wierd for those that just collect minatures....
(Because uncle Jervis says thats what the GW hobby is mainly all about.)

Flames of war is very balanced, but there are some armies that just dont interact well, for example an armored car company vs a fortified grenadier company with enough barbed wire for a straight line-the cars cant cross no matter what and the company wouldnt be able to contest the objectives. These matchups are few and far between, so you shouldn't worry to much unless you want to play a super specialist force without any diverse support(the afformentioned situation wouldn't matter if the armored cars had some infantry, especially pioneers, for wire removal) The game is very objective based, and you dont want to go into attrition unless you are losing, because the system for winner is 6 for no platoons lost, 5 for 1 platoon, 4 for 2 platoons or more, and for the defender 1 for no enemy platoons killed, 2 for 1, and 3 for 2. Its very fun.
Soviets are hord armies- fun, but unwieldly and expensive because of model count, there are notable exceptions to this, combined arms not required
British, combined arms usually required based on suppression and assualt
US, combined arms usually required based on firepower
Germans- army based on damaging as much as possible before being forced into situations where their strenghts dont matter as much- assualts- smallest unit count, cheapest army.

Depends on your area where youlive.Gaming clubs and your group of players. me i play with my regular gaming group. Also for your area.In my ccase Flames of war is on par with 40k for players, but in some areas 40k is more popular.
The thing for us was the price and of course the historical backgrounds. One of our favorites is seeing two armies fight each other that did not go against each other.
One of our favs is the 12th SS Hitler youth against the 101st Airborne. All lists are from the D Day sourcebooks.Kind of a what if the SS was not called back to fight the Canadians at Caen, but instead went on to fight at Careantan instead.

I think our group has maybe a dozen players locally, and three of the local clubs have active players with enough scenery too. At any club not in a local GW you'll find more FoW than 40K

FoW is the most popular historical ruleset at the moment, its common to find at least 1 gamer in gaming clubs who at least has an army. In my experience anyway.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Of course you do not have any FOW players.. you probably have one the best 20mm ww2 groups in the world. Heck, you some of the top people in the the gaming industry you get to game with.
My club is just a few of us 30 somethings lurking in the basement of one of our houses and finally got sick of GW.The only good GW game is Blood bowl. But that poor game is the Redheaded GW Step child.
But also i have played in leagues in shops before. i am just not much for the whole shop experience. At least when i am at one of our homes i can cuss, drink, and smoke. all of the good adult fun that i can have that will not be tolerated in a shop. Now if i was in the UK i would be in a pub Blood bowl league.

Love Bloodbowl and so happy that GW stopped messing with it. Now you can get all the rules free to download and buy any of the existing mini line and play immediately. The rules aren't changing completely anymore and they aren't adding dumber and dumber stuff to the games in the vain attempt to keep adding new material forever. I just laugh when people complain how games like Bloodbowl don't get any support anymore, when what they mean is that they no longer get the GW game treatment that continually screws up their playability. The rules are free and all the minis are available, what are they not supporting?? Hahahahahahaha!

Of the non- GW games I would say it is probably the most popular, at least alongside Warmachine.
At least in the UK and the club scene (from the smattering of clubs I've played at) everyone will probably have an army at least even if it isn't on their current 'to play' list.
But anyway as others have said the game is great fun - really tactical, and people seem to want to go the extra mile in terms of making good terrain and making scenarios and things like that.
If you're struggling to find opponents I would probably go to the official FoW forum, pretty sure they have some kind of club/store finder and forums on there which should help you out. Chances are you won't have to travel far!
