Coz the Imperial creed didn't exist in pre-heresy times, so are chaplains new, then?
Just interested.

They were a part of the Word Bearers legion.
They later became a part of the chapters that were formed after the HH.

Maybe in their current form yes, but the Heresy Codex has them as an option.

They were formed at a convention IIRC, maybe the Nikae one?

Could have been, I know that there was a mention of a Blood Angels 'Warden' or something like that which was very 'Chaplain esque', although my knowledge of Blood Angels is limited and they could be completely different.

Emperors Children also had Chaplains. Charmosian was held in high regard alongside Lord Commander Eidolon. I believe thenoobbomb is right and that some Legions adopted them after Nikea to watch over the moral fibre of the legion. The Word Bearers took advantage of this and seeded their own Chaplains across the other Legions so that they could infiltrate the lodges and spread seccesionist sentiment in the build up to the Heresy. Post Heresy they were made part of the Codex Astartes and had a more formalised role.

It seems most of the legions had a unique position similar to that of "chaplain", but only the word bearers "preached".

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

I think it was at Nicea they were implemented to prevent corruption and screen their fellow legionaries but they could of went by a different name then, but the Word Bearers definitely had them and sent them to other legions IIRC (I believe it was one of the HH books, either battle for prospero or the one from the SW perspective)

The word Bearers had them first I believe as preachers and everyone adopted them after nikea to keep watch over the psykers in the legions. Some, such as the Emperor's children and World Eaters, whodidn't have psyers IIRC, did still have them for some reason. I don't think the Thousand sons had them, mostly due to the fact Magnus ignored the decree and the legion kept up the sorcery.

Fear To Tred has the Blood Angels having Wardens to watch their bretherin and in particular to monitor those Psykers to make sure they don't use thier powers after Nikea. A Space Wolf Observer comments that they are very similar to Word Bearer Chaplins which does not go down well.
