I found this cool rock on my driveway that has a flat base and i was wondering if i need to use a plastic base under it or if i could just use the rock

The base under it is used in GW games to determine the footprint of the unit, so for tournaments, yeah you need it.

In terms of general practicality; that rock is most likely not as flat as you think, so your mini may be unstable on it alone. Then you have to consider that the rock may damage a gaming surface it's on and/or get the paint chipped off it.

...yeah, I think I'd generally avoid this as well. If you think the stone in question is so neat, then I'd glue your model to the rock, and then the rock to a base.

Carefully drill through it though to secure them together nicely.

You can solve most of Winterdynes practical problems by putting some felt underneath the rock. You could easily use one of those self adhesive pads you get to stick under furniture for use on solid flooring.
