For a first model, it's good. Certainly beats the first things I ever painted as a cub.

I have a hard time telling what exactly went wrong, simply because metallic paints are tricky like that. At a glance, it looks...gritty. I'd guess the paints are either they're too thick, or dried out. I'd recommend drybrushing the next one (a great skil to learn and invaluable for armies like necrons and metallic paints). In lieu of drybrushing on this guy, seeing as it's already a little late for that, a dark wash might help.

The blue looks good enough. Not particularly impressive in anyway, but not bad either.

Easily a tabletop standard of painting.

Its pretty damn good for a first model. Solid paintjob with a decent base.

I think your next step would be as firepower suggested and give it a dark wash, especially over the chest. Maybe if you want him to "pop" a little more try painting his eyes a bright green or a blue to match his orb and cloak. Eyes can be tricky though so don't dispare if you smudge paint all over his head.

What else do you have lined up?

Go ahead and give the model another wash of Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade (whatever the new Devlan Mud is). Once each coat is dry, drybrush on some light metal. It should give the model some more depth.

You have everything going for you. You've got brush control down and know at least basic basing. You can only get better from there!
As the others have said washes will help you immensely and drybrushing the metallics is not a bad idea... Good Luck!

This is just a pet peeve of my own but its probably how that unit is suppose to look since hes metal coated.

Its all one color for the body, nothing breaks it not even a lightened "edge" near the joints. Course this is also a curse for me cuz i tend to go overboard trying to "fix" that lol. Looks pretty good for a first.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.
