Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. This is officially my first battle report for the World Wide Dakka Campaign. I am pleased to have finally participate. Hopefully, I will have more time for more games. For now, here's the battle report.
Lord Judicator Valdrakh looked across the barren wastes of this particular ball. Korsk, the humans called it. A simple mining planet, one that might not have held much value for the other players of this particular war. For him, this would be his first testing grounds. He was rather late to arrive in-system, and thus only witnessed the final battles of the Necrons to overtake Masali, not participating personally. For this, he was mocked and ridiculed by the other Overlords. A fantastic start for the Atun Exile, they jeered.
Not today, he knew. Today, he would join the fight to take over these systems for the greater glory of the Necrontyr. This mining planet would be the first of his conquests, for the Engine World would need resources to repair and maintain it. His conquest here would allow for such resources to flow freely to the massive station. And then, time and plans willing...
"My Lord, enemy forces are approaching." he turned to find one of his Crypteks. He sighed inwardly, shelving his future plans for later.
"Already? These humans are anxious for their own slaughter, it seems," Valdrakh said.
"Not just any humans. Space Marines, my Lord, who call themselves the Space Wolves. It seems they were on route to another battlefield in the Venta System when they spotted us here."
This was interesting, thought Valdrakh. What better way to prove his mettle to the other Dynasty leaders than destroying this Space Wolves forces here? Granted, he had never fought Space Marines before. He would have to be certain his battle plans would prove the most effective against these super-humans.
"Assemble my forces. We have work to do," Valdrakh ordered.
"Yes, my Liege."

The Game was Purge the Alien on Dawn of War deployment. I allowed for him to deploy first.
And my deployment for left…
Center…
…and right
I tried to seize the initiative, but it didn’t work out. Also, nightfighting was established for the first turn.
Turn 1
Space Wolves
Before the game, he infiltrated Redmaw attached to a Grey Hunters squad into the ruins to my right and moved in closer.
Everyone else moved up, nothing else happened.
Necrons
The Scarabs and the immortals on the left moved up, and the Barge hugged the ruins on my side.
My Lancetek popped his Pulse, and allowed for everyone to see fine. The Stalker fired at the Thunderwolves first, got a hit, which allowed everyone else twin-linked! Afterwards, the Warrior squad, barge, and the Immortal Squad on the right shot at them
So, one thunderwolf went down, another one and the Wolf Lord got wounded.
Meantime, the Immortals on the left fired at the Grey hunters on their side, managed just one kill.
I tried to charge the scarabs, but they were an inch too far.
Turn 2
Space Wolves
Ugh… he got the reserves roll, and this… mofo… flew into the field.
Everyone else moved up some, the Wolves preparing to charge my Warriors.
Meantime, the Storm Eagle used the Machine Spirit and fired its missiles at the Warrior Blob and the Lascannons at the Barge.
Luckily, only five warriors fell, and three got back up. The Barge was tink’d, but otherwise fine. Here’s hoping the pilot is still a terrible shot!
Redmaw’s squad, however, was able to land quite a few shots on my right Immortal Squad. Five Immortals went down to shooting, never to get back up this fight.
The Thunderwolves charged! … the results were terrible, as expected. His Wolf Lord issued a challenge to my Overlord, and he accepted. I tried my Mindshackles, but it failed. Then, he got beat down. The other two wolves won combat by 5, and my Warriors were swept away. It sucked. Luckily, my Overlord got back up with all three of his wounds! Not that it would matter, anyways…
Necrons
My reserve rolls went fine, and the Deathmarks came in, targeting Redmaw and his squad. My anni barge hugged the ruins more, lining up for another shot against the Wolves. Again, the Stalker fired against the Wolves, and managed a hit. Both Immortal Squads were firing now at the Wolves. Only the Wolf Lord remained with one wound.
The Deathmarks fired at Redmaw’s squad, got two or three kills, I think.
With that, the Scarabs and the Overlord assaulted the Lord… And the Overlord promptly got killed. Again. After missing all of his strikes… And then he didn’t get back up this time.
I dunno, maybe he just needs some positive reinforcement to get better at close combat…
And the scarabs did nothing…
Turn 3
Space Wolves
Oh, God… Redmaw transformed… great.
The Storm Eagle zoomed to the center, and Redmaw moved away from his squad to go solo.
After the squad fired, there was only one Deathmark left, none of his brothers got back up. The Storm Eagle fired its missiles on the Immortal Squad on the left, and the lascannons on the barge. Only one Immortal died, but he got back up. The Barge got one penetrating hit, so its shields were dropped. However, it ignored its shaken result! Thank you, living metal!
Combat with the Wolf Lord continued, he continued to kill more scarab swarms, and the scarabs still didn’t do anything.
Necrons
At this point, defeat was certain for my beloved Necrons. The best they could now do is take down as many Marines as possible.
… Actually, I don’t quite exactly remember what happened this turn. I think I shot the Stalker at the Grey Hunter Squad on my right, and then the remaining Immortals on the right and the last Deathmark tried to kill Redmaw. He got two wounds, but not much else.
The Barge and the squad on the left shot at the Storm Eagle, but the flier managed to make its Jink save. Finally, the rest of the scarabs were wiped out.
Turn 4
Space Wolves
The Storm Eagle stayed put, and fired its missiles at the Immortals on the left and the lascannons at the Barge. The missiles didn’t do much (they scattered most of the time), but the lascannons took off another hit point on the Barge
The Immortals on the right were wiped off the map.
Then, Redmaw blew up my Stalker. Sigh…
The last Deathmark died to close combat.
Necrons
The last remnants of this force retreated into the corner, preparing for a desperate fight. They shot again at the Wolf Lord, but to no avail.
Turn 5
Space Wolves
The game was coming to a close. Both Grey Hunter squads stayed put, while Redmaw and the Wolf Lord closed in on the survivors. The Storm Eagle fired again, its lascannons finally hitting their mark. The barge exploded, but luckily nothing else took damage (or the Immortals who got hit got back up, don’t remember).
Necrons
The Immortals fired on Redmaw, FINALLY killing him off.
Then, I rolled, and ended the game.
Result: Space Wolves, by 8-2 Kill points.
Overhead, the Tombship lurked in the shadows of Korsk, invisible to the Space Wolf Battlebarge on the opposite side. It would remain there for the time being to provide orbital support for Valdrakh. Inside, the Necron “dead” were teleported to the ships holds, awaiting repair. At day’s end, Valdrakh’s “corpse” appeared, and fell in a pile of scrap. His eyes flickered to life for but a few seconds, before sputtering off again. Within those precious seconds, he reviewed what had just happened.
Damn Space Marines,
he cursed. They had swiftly routed his forces, forcing him to withdraw prematurely. His plans were ruined. Ruined! These humans would DARE to interfere!
His last thoughts formulated vengeance before he shut down again. Soon, the Canoptek servants would reconstruct both him and his forces, and he would return to Korsk in a withering storm…
Some thoughts:
I thought the Storm Eagle looked imposing at first, but in reality, it didn’t seem to do much. I should have just ignored it and focused on the units I could deal damage to more easily, especially in a Kill Point mission. The Thunderwolves, however, were quite the thorn at my side, and very tough to kill. In hindsight, I was a bit surprised that he didn’t move up his Grey Hunters up more to move in for the finish, but then again they were constantly moving through difficult terrain.
Scarabs were largely ineffective in close combat, but they were meant to tarpit anyways. Perhaps things would have been very different if I had taken Wraiths instead. They will definitely be my next purchase when I get the opportunity.
Perhaps if there wasn’t the 2/4++ save to account for, the Stalker could have looked better. As of right now, it might be more effective in a higher-cost game, when there are more guns around. Valdrakh, my Overlord, was also lacking in performance this game. If the Mindshackles worked, then maybe the Wolf Lord would have been dead around Turn 2 or 3. Of course, these variables were entirely up to the dice.
Quick question: Does the opponent roll for the Leadership test against
MSS, or does the Necron player?
Part of the problem is I just need time and money to purchase/build/paint some of the units necessary to make the army more effective on the whole, two resources I have not enough to do.
For general strategy: one thing I notice about my playstyle is I usually advance, even when I feel like I shouldn’t. There is plenty of room to maneuver around the table, so what I could have done is pulled back my units slowly, drawing the enemy units into a killing field that would have more potential to make more kills. That’s something I can keep in mind for future games.
Despite getting slaughtered, fun was had by all. It was a good game.
