I read that Google Author also has a feature that doesn't require a website email address, and can use a link on the page and a link on the profile instead. I set up a widget at Sturmkrieg to provide the functionality. Would it be possible to add the same feature here for the articles? It uses the Widgets MediaWiki extension and a widget.

Does it work for any profile or just google plus - that is, could I shoehorn in a dakkadakka profile and avatar or do I need to tie it in more closely to google's ecosystem?

It needs to have a link to the Google+ profile in order to function, or else a Dakka email address. I'm sure it would certainly be possible to display a Dakka profile and have the link. Possibly by entering an account ID number and a Google+ link, it could be possible to display the Dakka username and have something like "Google author profile" underneath it.

To use the Author tag, the person needs to have a Google+ profile set up with Dakka email address as it uses the domain to link the Author tag to your google+ account. This seems to be well and truly tied into Google+ for it's information.
The amount of work to get this up and running would only really make it worth while for Yak and Lego as far as I can see

Using the link does not require a website email address.
