Title asks the question ...
Spoiler:

Would dding static grass make the base look better or should I leave well enough alone?

I like the rocky look, but grass might add a little extra.

If you do add grass, I would think just do a very small amount in the cracks of the rocks.

Depends on the look you are going for - but I agree with d-USA - small clumps in the cracks would work best.

Get some dead grass; something that looks more like straw and is fairly tan or blond-colored. It'll look great!

To me a mix of last years and this years growth would work as well - especially in the cracks

bases look busy enough as they are... no grass!
and tbh static grass is garbage if you dont have/use a static grass applicator. use tufts of grass instead!

A few tufts of grass here and there maybe, but keep the overall muddy battelfield look.

Yeah, with the larger-rock look, too much grass would just start to make them look a little busy. But a little bit here and there in the cracks would give the bases a little contrast. I would go for something brown or orange... bright green might look a little out of place.

Saw a lot of bright green in the desert I did - especially after it had rained. I'd go with a mix of brownish and greenish grass though -

I think the grass and the green skin would complement eachother rounding off the model.

Nice looking bases. A little bit of static grass would go a long way to improve them.

One more vote for small amounts of relatively dry looking grass. The bases are pretty monochromatic, at the moment - I think a bit of a very pale green would add some nice contrast to the base without looking too jarring or busy. Reindeer moss/floral lichen is another good option for dry, scrubby underbrush. Even tiny bits of muted clump foliage. Just a touch of something to add contrast.
