After noticing that a Hellbrute model from the Dark Vengeance boxed set is selling on eBay for much less than an Obliterator model, I was considering using it is a base for conversion. For anyone that has both the models, how do they compare size-wise?

The Hellbrute is much larger and on a 60mm base (a tad larger than a normal dreadnought) while the Obliterator is on a 40mm base and is based off of Terminator armor.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

Yeah, I don't see this working very well... Oblits are a little larger than a Terminator, while Helbrutes are a little larger than a Dreadnought - comparatively:

Honestly, my favourite conversions involved combining CSM and Beastmen kits - even if it works out about the same instead of cheaper, at least they're less crap.
I'm debating making Centaurish Obliterators if I ever do (probably won't as I'm all in for Defilers / Forgefiends for my Heavy Support loadout)

I agree it's important to match fairly closely a normal Oblit size, to avoid endless in-game arguments re LoS etc.

With some serious razorsaw surgery and plenty of plasticard or greenstuff, I can see such a conversion working - cut the vertical middle out of the torso (leaving just the legs and chest armour) and chop out the 'waist', rejoin all four bits to make something that fits on a 40mm base, cover the gaps somehow, add some kind of head, trim down the arms and replace the ends with lotsa shooty weapons.

Not a quick and easy conversion at all, but entirely possible - I might give it a go myself if I had a spare Helbrute lying around
