I can't decide whether to continue collecting my Eldar army which is only just over 500 points at the moment. I want to continue but a 6th Edition update seems likely within the next year. I am unsure what is going to updated, I'm guessing lots is going. New codex and farseers to make them better are definitely coming. Should I grind everything to a halt or just continue playing and painting slowly?
Thanks in advance

Well... You could leave things as they are, and use them as an ally force and collect another army in the meantime, Or continue to build up your Eldar army, and have fun with it. I don't play eldar, and I don't know anyone that does. But I'd advise you to continue collecting the "Basic" things.

Thanks for that. What do you mean by basic, do you mean the things that aren't going to be updated or do you mean troops like guardians?

I doubt wave serpents and fire prisms will change. Check out the rumor thread for the list of supposed kits Eldar will be getting.

Yeah, like your basic troop choices. I understand that pathfinder teams are good.
Again, I'm not an eldar player so I don't know what help I can be.

I'd agree, buy now. Some of the units you have may change the style they fight in, or possibly weapons loadouts, but they're not going to outright get rid of anything. If you have a model for it now, it will have rules for it in the next codex.
Meanwhile, it is customary for GW to hike the prices of the minis of the army whose codex has come out (as there will be a lot more people who want eldar in a year or so than there are people who want them now). As such, it would be a good idea to buy those models now, while they're still cheaper.
The one exception I might have against this is metal models. There are a lot of eldar models still in metal, and they will undoubtedly get better plastic ones along with a new codex release. Anything plastic, though, I'd just go for. If you know you want to play a mechanized force, then just start buying and painting wave serpents now.

There are a lot of models that are in finecast now that are suppose to be plastic next year. I am waiting on plastic but will expand onmy tanks and maybe a wraithlord or two. Stock up on Dire Avengers and Guradians if you want.

Tanks, Dire Avengers, Guardians/Jetbikes, and Farseers/Warlocks are the things that are least likely to change, I suspect.

New jetbikes are comming. Its already been confirmed that the core is going to match the DE reavers. This from a GW interview about the reaver design.

I'd say continue buying and painting slowly. And buy anything you like the look of. Looking at the chaos dex release - very little changed. New units were added, but I can't think of any off the top of my head which were lost (maybe some options - if anyone knows specifics feel free to enlighten me ). Functions for most of them remained entirely the same.
From an aesthetic perspective it could be better to wait will the new codex so your models all match, but I very much doubt any of the aspects will change in function or be lost. They've had the same roles since forever.
And don't buy guardians. Not because the models may change, but because right now they are the worst troops choice in the game ( IMHO anyway )

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives. |

With only 500 points, you really won't have to worry about purchasing things and having them be altered drastically. You don't enough of the basic stuff yet.
Given the basic trend of GW releases, I expect Guardians to become better. Wraithguard as troops might get buffed, and Wraithguard in general will get a buff.
Farseers can only become better so they are always worth having.
Autarchs will probably become a decent choice.
I can't really see anything get nerfed or made useless, thats not the trend of GW codices lately. I do see some new kits being released that will be awsome new units. Although they could simply come out with new Plastic kits for old sculpts. Get the Dark Eldar treatment.
I could see them making 2 varients of Wraithlord in a single kit. A melee and a ranged version, possably occupying 2 different FoC slots.

I'd say keep collecting, its not like prices are going to drop. Here's how I look at it. This is a game that is timeless. With a videogame, if you don't get it quick and play it you may miss your chance, because the community for it will die in a couple months maybe a year or two. But with warhammer and 40k it doesn't work that way, the community has been around for what? twenty or thirty years? It's a game that persists, and works on your time. There may be less frequent games, but there will always be games. The figures aren't going anywhere, they'll be here for decades. The players aren't going anywhere, and even if a couple leave or join the community will be here. Somehow it all feels timeless. So, with that in mind you may as well keep collecting, keep playing, and keep enjoying it. They may be sub par for a few years but who knows, in 5 years will they be the new beat stick? Only one way to find out.
