Alright since im a huge fan of the series and everytime i watch the movies it just keeps making me want to play the miniatures game so i finally gave in, i picked up 2 boxes of uruk-hai and a troll, im thinking about being the guy at the game store to run events for the game since no one at my store plays and i want to get people to start playing my question is what is the most played point limit in the game.

I haven't played a proper game that isn't themed around something, but I think 500 a side is the default number- 300 is more patrol-size, and 700 a large battle.

I'd agree, about 500pts is what the norm is were I play, altought games of 750pts can be just as fun. If your looking to get people started them somewhere around 300pts might be a good bet as it will allow them to get a good idea of the game and how it plays
Best of luck!

Hello, Welcome to LOTR. I can tell you from experience, trying to start a gaming community is very taxing. First off, talk to and convince your store manager that this is a good idea, and will bring in lots of $$$$ if they help you promote it, for two months LOTRs was the most sold product line in the store. Next get some fliers for them/you to hand out. Next read the rules, make sure you understand them inside and out, at least as well as you can. Next the best way to start is to have people buy one box, Well, maybe two now that they cut the number of models in half. then you paint or modify one of those models to be a captain, with the exception of Goblins and hobbits, those boxes with a Captain WYSIWYG come out to about 275-300ish points and that is around $30 - $40 to get started, this is a small investment to play games compared to other games. And is generally fairly easy to talk people into when you remind them that even a video game cost more.
Set things up very fast, have a plan, If you keep it organized, more people will be interested. What I did is started a league, where everyone would play each other twice, I gave them three weeks to get their games completed, and offered a few prizes. Sure it cost you a little out of pocket, but you will get people to play. Before the league, I had 4-5 constant players in my store, after the league I had 12-14 players, some of them have stopped playing with the new 6th ed of 40K and some have moved away, and I had stuff come up so I could not keep the league going, but if you can keep people interested for 5 or 6 weeks, you should find yourself with a good number of players to play against.
You will only get out what you put into it, do not rely on others, you have to make it happen. "If you build it, they will come" Do not discourage anyone from playing one type of army or another, Ask them what they like, If they are a fan of LOTR it helps, If not, have them pick the models they like the best. The best part of LOTR is anyone can will on any given day, there really is not a big advantage to one army or another, It is all about how you play it.
As far as average games go, We play at 500, 600, 700, and 750. Anything more and it gets to time consuming. if you are playing on a 4x4 I would recommended no more than around 650 maybe 700, otherwise you get to many models and it just becomes a pushing match, if you are are playing on a 4x6 I would say no less than 500, anything smaller and you spend a half hour getting to battle. I hope this helps, and wish you the best of luck, I am headed to Oahu, and will be attempting to create another community there. Let me know if you need any advice.

Whilst I hate to attempt to thread jack and starting a new thread to ask the same questions seemed stupid, I'm getting back in to the game after my group showed some interest . Which book has the most current army lists?

Well, the main rulebook is pretty outdated (I got mine four years ago, and it's still the current one), so really you'd need to rely on the individual sourcebooks for the unit rules.

The New main Rulebook is now "The Hobbit and unexpected journey" Hardcover. Think of it as LOTR 5th ed etc
The sourcebooks are still valid as "army codexies" for all your army Statlines etc
EDIT: human heros i belive would be in the "Free peoples" sourcebook.
