So I just got back from a the LFGS where they had a 40K where they had a zombie horde led by Typhus vs any HQ (single model, no SC, no guards or squad)
I'm not sure if this really seemed like a good game or not. The zombies (level 1) had fleet, rage, feel no pain, and move through cover.
Stats were T:5 (level2 were 6); A2, LD10, S3 (level 2 was 4), 5+ armor
Special zombies (every character that died) was S5 T7
Every time a zombie (special or not) fell, it would get moved to the back of the board. Table was played long ways, two tables long for at least 10 feet. Once we got to the half way point zombies would spawn from the rear instead of the at the back of the hoard.
The entire goal was was to kill Typhus. His stats were modified so he was Ws7, T7, 2++, W8, feel no pain, auto-pass all psychic tests, eternal warrior, I5, with a poison weapon (2+) that ignores armor and instant kills. He came with an entire squad of plague marines. His psychic powers were made up with affects that gave ALL zombies 3+T, make units take a T test or take a wound with no saves.
Is it just me or was this game made by a TFG?

It could be fun, depending on what was allowed to face off against the horde, and how big the initial horde was.

Initial horde was about 40 zombies. They all moved independently 6" towards the nearest enemy. If they were 6" away, they would auto charge into combat.
No restrictions other than no SC. Everything had 3+ deny the witch, except Typhus had a 2+.
But we were never given a description of what we'd be facing. I had a crisis suit commander with 1 weapon that could hurt Typhus, but had to get through 10 PM, 2++, and feel no pain.

We did a similar thing. Zombies were similar to what you listed, ghosts were the same but with a 2+ cover save, T3.
Everyone had a 200pt killteam, and it was last man standing.
Wicked fun.

I didn't find this fun. The whole thing with Typhus really bothered me. 8 wounds that get a 2+ invul save, 5+ feel no pain, not to mention his huge horde surrounding him.
I forgot to mention. If your model ever took a wound, you have to take a T test at the beginning of every turn afterwards. If you fail, you are removed and made into a zombie.
I wish I would have known this stuff before hand, because it didn't sound fun.

Uh. You guys weren't supposed to win?
Haven't you ever played like, videogames with endless waves and stuff? The fun is seeing how well you do.
It's like tetris.
It was a for-fun event, not some competition.

Exactly what I was thinking. I myself had fun at the event, and was interested to see if the group of companions could work together to get typhus down.
We had one chance, with a beefed up DE Archon and my farseer giving him 2++ rerollable saves. But on the first set of attacks he fails the 2++ and the reroll. Sigh
I was fine with the difficulty, except that every model, even the basic zombie was given at least a 3+ deny the witch roll, making taking psykers completely worthless at times, good thing I was the only psyker there. sigh again.
But overall fun.

I was having fun, but that was probably more from hanging out with friends and playing then the actual game itself.
I do think the zombies, combined with respawning, were a little too tough. Especially when any wound will make your character roll at the beginning of every turn to see if he gets autokilled. It was fun. If it was just seeing how long we could hold off hordes. I'm all for that.
But it wasn't about seeing how long we could survive. The mission had a specific goal to take down 1 guy. Were we not supposed to try and complete the mission?
By virtue of luck alone, we happened to have 1 guy who could have damaged Typhus, who would still get a 2+ save with feel no pain. That's not much fun to find out that your unit is completely harmless to the villain. Maybe I'm just a fan of letting any player be useful though.
But the game had some great moments. There was a cheater that kept trying to use his weapons and special rules after his character died. But again, it could have been any other game and I'd have the same fun from the people, not the game.

I had a similar game last year. We used the Kill Team rules. There were around 100 old-school plague zombies and 3 or 4 Talos Pain Engines vs about 7 Grey Hunters and 10 Tactical Marines. In the end, all the Tactical Marines got dragged down and killed, and only 1 Grey Hunter made it to the objective, but we did succeed in completing a minor victory. It was pretty fun, but the Talos were freaking indestructible.
