According to research from the University of Southern California, teens with internet-enabled phones are twice as likely to hook up with random strangers for sexual fun times and are more likely to engage in said fun times without proper protection. The study, which claims smartphones open up "a risky avenue," - though I guess that depends on what kind of sites you're visiting - indicates that kids with fancy new phones are 1.5 times more likely to be sexually active than their clunky, Nokia-wielding competitors. The study was carried out on 1,940 high-school students in Los Angeles last year and was presented at the 140th Annual meeting of the American Public Health Association yesterday. It's worth noting, however, that only a third of the respondents copped to using their cell phone to access the internet. It's also worth noting that teenagers' claims about their sex lives generally only have a passing relationship with the truth. It's also worth noting this were students in Los Angeles... and all jokes about California aside, it's a little weird there compared to the rest of the planet. Five percent of the kids admitted that they'd used the internet to seek sexual partners and 17 percent said they'd been approached by sex-seeking strangers. Also, non-heterosexual kids are apparently five times more likely to seek sex partners online.

"We-parents, health educators, physicians-must recognize that cell phones are yet another new way for adolescents to meet sex partners," said Hailey Winetrobe, MPH, CHES, researcher at USC and an APHA Annual Meeting presenter. "Parents and school health professionals should talk to their teens about being safe in meeting people online and in using condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies."

Even if it increases your sexual encounters by 1.5 that would still be 1.5 x 0 for me, so it would be no sex for me.

When I was younger I would go to bars or parties to meet sexual partners. During the process I would drink heavily and often make sexual parteners I regretted in the morning.

If my kids use cell phones, at least they are likely to be spared the "Oh god, I did that?" moment.

Bogus study. Not that it's untrue. Back in the long forgotten mists of singlestime iPhones were one of the things that clued me in to DTF girls.
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it seems to imply iPhones make people DTF, not DTF people get iPhones which is what I would say. It's like saying yoga pants make girls more sexually active.

They do, or at least they allow their inherent sexiness to rise to the top. Iphones likely do the same thing. They allow people who may want to become promiscuous but don't really have an avenue to become promiscuous through using this avenue.

Probably really more this than anything. Almost everyone I know owns an iPhone, none of them are particularly swimming in sex. Hell the person I know most inclined to promiscuity doesn't have a smart phone of any sort.

And then there is also this. Hard to say though. The things I hear the kids talking about in the game store nowadays shock me, and I'm not even that old. Not many of them have iPhones though.

I would put forth a counter hypothesis that being a teenager makes you sexually promiscuous.

I would also put forth a companion hypothesis that being a teenager also makes you more likely to have an Iphone.

Considering what kind of site Dakka is that's kind of a duh statement. Then add to that the people who have admitted iPhone =/= sex and you basically have the exception to virtually any societal norm; probably including Dakka.

I sent more pictures of my junk to girls (twice) when I had an LG, as opposed to the 0 times I have sent photos as an iPhone owner. I was more promiscuous as an LG owner! Number of naughty pictures received has been higher with an iPhone though.
