So, I got DV from my fiancé for my birthday (I am a happy girl indeed!!!)

This is the first termie I have painted from the set. I am overall happy with him; I know the OSL needs something else, I think! Ah! I do not know. Anyhoo, waddaya think, people of Dakka?

The light on his shoulder?

While you have done the light very well, looks great in fact, it isnt very clear where the light is coming from. Something to improve for your next go!
Edit: I know where its coming from as you said so before, but on first glance without your comment I dont think many people would first guess it was the lamp .I think the light spreads too much across the body, it looks as if its focused down on the terminators shoulder, which of course, its not.

Awesome! That is what I couldn't put my finger on - thank-you for the compliment! It is really difficult trying to apply a 3D 'radiant ring' to it. Ugh.

I can see what you mean, tbh it is a tiny light source for so much, but it was a first go so I will know for next time.

So, keep the 'ring' of light tighter then and keep the 'beam' straight . . . .

Agree that whilst the light source is a little off, the actual painting for the OSL looks great!

I've seen a lot of great results using auspexes on space marines - where the marine is looking at the screen, it's nice and easy to see where the OSL should be painted on the model (almost like he's shining a torch on his face!). Might be worth giving a go?

I agree with the others, the OSL looks good, it's just in the wrong place haha. As for the NMM, I think you need to add a little more contrast too it. I find it's the quick change from light to dark that makes a decent looking NMM. I like this tutorial a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig4v4YUV9ZQ&feature=plcp

cooool, the comments are very much appreciated, it is always nice to be told you are kinda good at something, even when they are not quite right!!!

That is most excellent - I am not great at NMM, this is a great help, thanks Sehguhdier!!

Do the OSL with all of that Dark Vengeance plasma and power swords you got and you will have a force to be reckoned with. You could get away with doing OSL coming from the fingers of the powerfist. Glowing powerfists don't always look right, but when they are done right they look spectacular. Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone!! The only issue I have with that, is the fact I want to intergrate the DV dudes into my DA army, who haven't got OSL power weapons . . . . . Excuse to practice more?! OSL ALL THE THINGS!!!!!

Thanks again you lovely people.

Update - the lesson I take from this:

My painting of OSL is ok, just object/placement. I didn't want to tamper with my painting, so I kinda just took his little puny light off . . . . . He now has a bespoke, fully intergrated built-into-armour lamp, and it looks 'right'. the angle of the lamp justifies the radiant, etc.

. . . . . Odd model for an odd person :3 Pic at some point to show ya'll!

Thanks again for the advice everyone

I really like the colours used for the armour. How did you achieve that scheme?

If you were to apply a gloss effect, and make sure the lens of the shoulder-light is white as possible, your OSL point of origin will be much clearer.

Everything else is quite good. Well done.

Aww, you guys :3 *blushes somewhat*

Gloss . . . . I will have to try this, I am secretly terrified of the stuff . . . . Seen too many horror stories involving it . . .

Snrub: Basecoat Scorched Brown, Second coat Graveyard earth, Apply heavily watered down Brown ink. Like, 3:1 (water:ink!) 3rd coat 50:50 GE & Bleached Bone, 4th & 5th Bleached bone.

I use 1:1 paint to water ratio for 1st,2nd,3rd coats, 4th & 5th were 1 paint to 2 water . . . .

I like the matt effect it creates, and it looks old without doing battle damage.

Thank-you for asking, I feel honoured!

I do not have any of the new paints/names, sorry! I am still in the old paints, don't bin what ain't broke right??

This might help you with where to place the light. The model is very well painted nevertheless.
