So yeah as the title says i'm new to Infinity and wanting to get into it. Is there any particular direction to start with and and hints and tips for a complete newbie would be really helpful

Have you been to the http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en yet? You can download the rules there. There's also the the thread at the top Infinity for Beginners. I think the hardest decision is what faction to play. You can find some background that you might like or a style of tactics that fits you. Once you decide on a faction I'd suggest getting a stater box and little else. Try having a small game just with that.

As CDK said, this thread: Infinity for Beginners will be really useful to you. A lot of people have been involved in making sure it has what you need as a new player. And feel free to use the thread to ask questions if you'd like. I imagine i'm not the only one who checks it regularly.

Speaking personally I had an extensive look through the miniatures gallery for each faction, then watched the faction videos, and went with the ones which models/style appealed to me the most.

As a general rule Infinity is a little more tactical than many other wargames - there are still strategic (list building, choosing units etc.) that are important, but you can buy something because 'it looks cool' and still find out that you can use it in your army without any nasty surprises and finding out that it's crap - unless you go mental and buy 3 TAGs (the big robots) directly or something
