Hi, welcome to Dakka!
Some good tips and tutorials in the Painting and Modelling section of the forum, and there's some great inspiration in the showcase section, which I see you've already found. I'll make a note to check out your pictures once they're up. There's an FAQ at the top of this sub-forum which will tell you how to post images to the gallery too.

Use a contrasting background, white background for dark minis, black background for light colored minis. Don't use too much flash.
