...That might end up requiring the Emperor falling to Chaos and Horus remaining loyal, which would be kind of strange.

Also if that were the case Gulliman or Sanguinus would probably be more likely to take on the leadership role on the traitors' end than Dorn...

But if the Emperor fell to chaos then wouldn't it be okay for everyone to just follow their Emperor? The ones who didn't would be considered heretics and traitors right?

What would happen in the historical sense, or what would happen as in how would each legion be played? There would be some problems with assigning legions to each god for a start:

Khorne could possibly get the Space Wolves or Blood Angels. Ultramarines would also be an option if his martial pride side was emphasized instead of his RWAAGH BLOOD side.

Slaanesh would be harder to place. I guess the White Scars are an option, but they're never really implied to be obsessed with their speed like the EC were obsessed with perfection. If you went with Slaanesh's otherworldly beauty thing, I guess it would make sense that it would try corrupting Sanguinius and the BA.

Tzeentch could possibly take the Alpha Legion (provided they're secretly loyal in this universe) and emphasise his scheming aspect. Otherwise, it'd probably just end up with another legion tricked into making a deal with it.

Nurgle might take Dorn or Guilliman, since both of those liked having set plans, so Nurgle could get them by offering the opportunity to be unchanging and such.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

Dorn would be more undivided, no?

AL

Ferrus Manus - reliant upon only self, love of technology, sees others as either means to improve/test self or tools, "The Flesh is Weak" motto... probably a Perturabo equivalent, Undivided

Guilliman - Martial pride/honor leans toward Khorne, but I could see undivided easily

Dorn - *glances at Sigismund* Khorne for martial prowess (and bloodlust...); Pursuit of creating the perfect, eternal defense I could see going to either Nurgle or Slaanesh, otherwise... Undivided

Corvus Corax - stealth surprise tactics could lean them towards Tzeentch or possibly becoming the Alpha Legion equivalent. However his capacity for guilt... maybe Night Lords equivalent...

Jaghatai Khan - Let's see, likes putting decapitated heads on spikes or sending said decapitated heads back to his opponents, man of fierce honor, loyalty and ruthlessness... Khorne much?

Leman Russ - ...Khorne... but I could see a potentially interesting twist in which he's driven to embrace the psyker within and have his hand forced to serve Tzeentch.

Lion El'Jonson - Undivided. Frankly, I feel that he would most likely become the Horus/Lorgar equivalent. Brilliant strategist, ego seemingly easily inflated, also easily driven towards bitterness/resentment which provides for a fairly good weakness that the gods of Chaos could prey upon. Amazing orator so could sway brothers to his side... probably Lorgar equivalent more or less

Sanguinus - This one is tough, he's martially powerful, he's honorable, points towards Khorne. But then there's the psyker issue, his ability to predict the future... that leans towards Tzeentch. In the end, I'm going Tzeentch with Sanguinus, his angelic appearance and story sort of makes me think of him as a symbol of hope which teeters him ever so slightly towards Tzeentch. But then again, he was sort of naturally perfect... Slaanesh maybe? GAAAAHHH!!! Undivided, Horus equivalent if Jonson assumes the Lorgar equivalent.

Vulkan - Pursuit of knowledge seemingly leans him towards Tzeentch, BUT being the most suited to Emperor's vision of a peaceful Empire (a utopian ideal) could easily land him in the embrace of Slaanesh (pursuit of a perfect ideal thrown into overdrive)

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I don't think the way the Dornian Heresy did it is all that bad.

Raven Guard -> Tzeentch, but the exact opposite of the regular TS. Since they've been tinkering with abominations, flesh change, they embrace it instead of trying to purge it with a Rubic.

White Scars -> Slaanesh (Doooooooooooomrider. nough said).

Space Wolves -> Khorne

Blood Angels -> Nurgle, mainly to re-create the "Vampire-theme" as a "blood disease" sort of thing.
