I planned on making a khorne chaos general and I thought of giving him the black mace BUT I planned to give him asword like weapon to make him look like a swift blademaster. My question is , Do I really need to give him a club shaped weapon or could a evil and menacing sword work to?

I'd say with your friends you could make it whatever you want. But for tournaments that aren't local you'd probably need an actual Black Mace. You might be able to slide by with just making the weapon distinguishable from all the rest and as "The Black Mace"

The original Daemon Weapon rules stated that the weapons can take many forms, so for instance the "Death Sword of Death" didn't have to appear strictly as a sword. Many artifacts may have similar abilities, so you can model them as you want. But yes, as the current codex doesn't strictly say this, if your in a place where proxying may be an issue, stick with a mace like object just for safety. My Raptor Lord's just using the maul from the Chosen Champion out of Dark Vengeance, though if you want you could just make a weapon with a long shaft and a short blade, just to give the semblance of a mace for ease. =P

One thing that comes to mind is that power swords, maces, etc now have individual rules for each "type" of weapon.

I would play it safe and just use a very fancy looking mace if I were the OP.

It's an artistic hobby where cool trumps all. I would model whatever I felt like and would inform my opponents what it does.

Have a look at Balin's Mace from the new Hobbit movie - http://www.wetanz.com/balin-s-mace/ - looks like a cross between an axe and a mace. Something similarish might suit you, i.e. a sword with mace-like spikes on the end? Admitteldy, it may not suit the 'swift blademaster' concept though...

Another crazy thought - 'mace' could refer to a mace-like helmet? Or actual head this is Chaos, after all...

You could also just model a suitably big pommel on the handle of the sword.

I actually thought of combining a bloodletter sword with a longer weapon shaft to get an halberd/sword like look, but damn that balin mace is aswome too.
I asked the local gw store manager what he thinks about that one. He says that personnaly he'd be ok with a sword , axe or even a stick (I seriously thught of giving him a stick, imagine a khorne lord beating the hell out of taus with it. Taus on a stick!) . Still thanks for all the good advices.

You could probably use any flail, mace, club, staff, bludgeon, or wicked-looking hammer in place of the Black Mace.

That big honking bit from the Chaos Knights box is my Black Mace of choice (have 2 on different models). Trying to find something "demon sized" now.

Those blunt half-axe/hammer things from the Lizard Man Temple Guards would probably be a nice unique bit also.

Halberds and Axes would represent axe-like weapons.

Swords, rapiers, large daggers would represent sword items.

Spears, lances, other pointy bits would represent lance weapons.
