Unknown cause as of yet, with 80 homes damage and at least 2 confirmed dead. As a local story I know it may not be of interest, to everyone, I thought the picture was pretty astounding and others would want to see it.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
That picture is stunning. Any ideas on possible causes? Gas leak, meth lab in the basement...?

its national news, I saw it this morning.
I warned you all that re electing Obama would have serious consequences
On a more serious note I believe they ruled out meth lab early on. I'm pretty sure this will end up being gas. Natural or LP.

If that were a meth lab, then it'd have been confirmed by now; the trace evidence, residue and smell would give it away.
I'd have difficulty believing that was a natural gas explosion, just because the concentration of gas in the house that would be required to produce a blast such that would cause that kind of devastation is unlikely.
Did someone already say propane? Because that'd be my guess. Not sure how it'd fill up a house, though.
EDIT: Yes, someone did already say 'propane'. I'm not sure how I missed that.

If it was a propane tank going off, google "Bleve" (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion).
We had a storage tank go off in a neighbouring suburb (next to the airport). The "boom" could be heard for 15 km and the sky's orange glow was apparent for at least that distance.

When I lived in Vegas years ago, the dynamite plant in Henderson had an explosion. It woke me out of a sound sleep, and the blinds in the bedroom were blown inwards.
Cheesecat wrote: Yeah, that explosion destroyed about 3 homes and damaged a dozen others I don't think someone 20 miles away would have felt that.
Blame my late-night posting!
Looked through Facebook to find his post again. Actually he lives 5.5 miles away. I can see some windows rattling there.
Heard of the Halifax explosion in 1917? The detonation was so strong that windos within 70 kilometres broke...
Yeah well that was a boat loaded with gunpowder, if I recall correctly. There used to be a commemorative ad on tv played every year on the anniversary or around. The pictures of the devastated city were horrifying.

Even a small amount of propane can cause a decent sized bang. If the house where the blast originated had something like say an over-sized BBQ w/extra tanks, or say a home machine shop or similar, it could cause that.
Hell, the moron across the street from me has an over-sized garage which he's turned into his own private little autobody shop. He's had a couple run-ins with the local Fire Department over his additional and large propane tanks he keeps and doesn't look after that well. Not sure how he affords to pay the fines!
Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios
That must have been some gas leak. The whole house must have been filled up.

Actually, some thing on the beach got blown up here, it was for me around 20km away, and we heard a loud bang.
It wasn't a very big thing, but it was heard in a 30km radius, so, with a very big explosion, I say you would.

You have to remember beaches are lot flatter than suburbs so there's not as much stuff blocking the noise pollution.
