The basic theme for this is post is whether the mines of moria box-set is balanced.

My problem is that the Fellowship keep on smashing my Moria Goblins. I even played a scenario that if I killed a single Hobbit I would win but I couldn't even get to them! Th pesky blighters kept their distance while Aragorn and Boromir were running round and cutting through hordes of Goblins for fun. My poor Troll is fed up of being beaten down (I swear he's looking more depressed these days).

My only thought (hope really) is that the fellowship are worth far more points of Goblins than I have. Is that the case?

I currently own:
A Goblin king
48 Goblins (usual split)
Cave Troll

What can I add to these guys to beat that Fellowship?

Haha, I have had the same problem. I used to play this with a friend of mine a while ago, and he would always win. The thing that I found out was getting surrounds on the heros is a SUPER big deal.

And if you are just in a sanario where you just have to kill a hobbit, then just engage the other heros with a single goblin (Per hero) and chase down those hobbits! Just leave enough goblins to keep the heros busy. (The troll also helps with this.)

Those are just a few things that helped me when I started playing this box set.

Thanks!

Some Cave Trolls most definitely, they're fun and bashy. If you get two to even Aragorn, he'll die.

The Fellowship are definitely better, but LOTR in general lends itself to more scenario play imho.

All I've ever done is smash one of the lesser hobbits and that gives victory. It's simply a matter of either sniping one or tying everybody else up into a combat then going for the hobbits.

Yup, the mines of moria boxed set is ridiculously biased towards the fellowship- to win, do what the others said- tie the fighters up with a goblin each, and send the rest at a hobbit.

Here is what I do with the goblins to defeat the Fellowship, which way out number's the Goblins in the starter box as far as points go. If you are going toe to toe, you are going to have trouble. But to start all your archers need to target Legolas First, and the Boromir second, then if time allows Gandalf, Legolas has the lowest def-fence, and his bow will rip you to pieces, then Boromir with his horn. Next like others have said, spread your goblins, Pick your battles, send one goblin after each hero at a time, and team up on the hobbits, If they do not go down fast you are in trouble, Next max your attacks on each hero, unless you are baiting the hero, you should not have less 4 and more like 8 goblins fighting any of the heros at one time. Leaving Boromir for last, I normally go after Gandalf, then Gimli, then Aragon, and finally Boromir (unless the troll is alive). you still need allot of luck though, cause they have so much might and fate to stay alive. Save your might, If you are playing point for point, you should have like 8+ captains and or shamans, to even out the points. and the might in the game, send your troll after Boromir alone to avoid the horn and hope. You have to make him spread out, so you can trap them. If they stay bunched up you are screwed,

Hope this helps.

As far as things to add, start with a couple of Shamans, Fury for the win. Next is some more captains, I personal love Gorbag, (the lesser king) a few more trolls would not hurt. But mostly you need more might to counter what the Fellowship brings. and shamans to counter the horn of Gondor.

Hope this helps.

So I was right about points diff. Roughtly how many points are the Fellowship then? (If I wanted to play a balanced game against them). Can I break out my (proxy) Balrog?

Thanks for the advice, I will definitly try the next time I encountr them.

you should manage to break out the balrog for this one, the fellowship's like 900 points IIRC.

Yeah, fellowship vs. Goblins and balrog would be more balanced.

I will warn you though:

The Balrog is a very pricy model (Money-wise and Point-wise) and in my experience, he's NEVER fun to use. Maybe he'd be more enjoyable in a themed battle like this...

One little tip for the hobbit killing scenario, keep feeding a single goblin to aragorn/bormir a turn, if their control is gone you can just squeeze through and beat those pesky hobbits intp the ground!
