I am just starting a new Tau Sept. The color scheme I want to attempt is something like this sample.

Mephiston Red, Chaos Black, Temple Guard Blue, and a good Leather color I have mixed up.

I want to name the Sept Es'run (domineering structure) for my own fluff creation later about how the first settlement was in a huge dormant island volcano. It would tie the fire, water and earth castes into the story bit and represent the colors I am trying to mess with.

My question about the painting bit is 1) do the colors work together? and 2) How do I get the creases between the armor plates to stay black? I used the black as a primer but the red still gets in the creases and I think it would look better with more distinct plate separation.

My sample Shas'ui is drying now and I will link a picture when I can handle him for photos. I think he turned out well for just base coating so far. Will edit and ask for more criticism/comments on him soon.

I have the same issue with the armour joints; I'm afraid the only solution I've found so far is perseverance and a thin brush to repaint the joints...

Very thin black, very carefully applied. If it's done right the grooves will suck the paint at least part of the way. Otherwise, Jadenim's way.

How about painting a lighter red base and then use a fairly dark red wash. This should give a similar effect for much less effort.

I'm struggling to colour inside the creases of my csm models, black patches everywhere. Maybe we should swap armies?

The Tau at least have the benefit that if you miss with the black a little bit you can fix most of the problem with a wet finger to take the black off immedately. You might not get all of the smudge off, but it makes re-coating your base coat much easier.
