I am thinking of making an Adeptus Mechanicus army. I will probably build the bulk of it, or at least a good portion of it, from some of my old models. I am planning to make it robot-heavy, and I want to use one of my current codexes, which include:
Space marines
Dark eldar
Tau
Orks
Imperial guard
or tyranids
I don't want it to be a tournament army, I'm just trying to pick a codex to stick with so that I don't keep changing my mind.

Based on what you listed, Imperial Guard could be a good base to start with, thanks to the tanks and cheap infantry. And then you could add allies to help provide some extra punch to represent the more advanced tech the AdMech would have access to: either Space Marines or Tau, depending on your preference.

It's really a matter of what floats your boat, as I've seen all different kinds of codex combinations used to represent AdMech armies.

Linked below is Oddjob's Admech army, using the Tyranid codex. It worked really well!

I think I like Tannhauser's idea the best: as tyranids don't have tanks or allies, and I would want at least one of those, because admech tanks are some of the coolest things ever, in my opinion. Now I'm mostly torn between space marines or tau as allies. The space marines would seem like the obvious choice, as they are battle brothers, but if I use the tau, I could use a schism as the reason why the allies are not as close (or are tau battle brothers too, I don't have my rulebook with me). Game wise, I would probably choose space marines, as they can provide the cc that the ig lack. I think space marines will be the way I go, as the main reason I would pick tau would be the cool tech, but space marines have that too, like thunderfire cannons, counts-as whirlwinds, large robots for dreadnoughts/terminators, etc. This should be fun

I took Archmagos Rosinus and his Equites Cytherae to a tournament. I came last but it was great fun and it was much admired. The failings were mine not the army's

I used SM Codex with a pair of Forgemasters, equites/dreadnaughts, skitarii/ tacmarines.

I would say Space Marines, as you can take Techmarines as HQ, and Skitarii are usually represented as heavily armoured. Maybe you could take some Imperial Guard allies.

I personally use the necron codex as my admech rules. Though I am intrigued at see a tyranid codex used. Gonna have to page through it.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

I agree Necrons are a pretty good match - hi-tech weapons and base stats pretty close to marines.

Tau are also a good match for the hi-tech, and I suppose Fire Warrior stats are a fair match for non-marine AdMech.

General marines too, but then you miss out on the cool non-marine stuff which reflects the unusual equipment of AdMech.

Not convinced any of the others are a great match.

Grey knight inquisitor retinues would work well i think. the mix of options in each unit it you take the named guy will let you use all kinds of weapons and powers that could be very ad mech. Take some guard allies for tank squads for extra fire power.

I would say some combination of IG and Space Marines would do the trick. It mostly depends on what kind of army you want. One way or the other you will be able to get vendetta's, so your AA is covered. You'll probably also be able to get lots of bodies one way or the other because you can take 2 guard platoons if you want.

Lets say you want to go space marines primary detachment, you have access to rifleman dreads (for your robots) but really thunderfire cannons are the best, and they come with a techmarine manning it. You can base your list off a somewhat competitive thunderfire/vulcan Hestan and use vulcan as a counts-as secutor character to lead your army.

IG would be a better approximation of Admech troops though. Stormtroopers make great elite skitarii. You can model HW teams as tracked Praetorian servitors. Plus you have the tanks. If you want to go tank heavy, take an IG primary detachment, hands down.

In the end, i'd recommend the IG primary, C:SM ally combo, use the space marines for their thunderfire cannon, techmarine character, and a robot maybe. Use the IG for tanks/vendettas and some boots on the ground.

Yes there are Admech lists based on 'crons, orks, and even nids... but I think they are cheesy. The weaponry represented in the necron codex are just too weird for anything the imperium has. Keep in mind the Admech are the ones supplying weapons to the rest of the imperium, their weapons are only slightly better versions of what everyone else has. Not off-the-wall death rays.
