this came up in a game when my opponent threw 5 metla bombs at my tervigon in CC. I said he could only through one but is said they weren't grenades and then his friend came over and confirmed that he could through all 5. who was right? how can i prove to him he can only through one per assault if i was right? thank you.

Melta bombs are grenades. Grenades are give rules that allow them to be used in combat and/or thrown.
The melta bomb can be used in combat, but cannot be thrown.
The restriction of one grenade per unit is for thrown grenades only. Every model equipped with grenades can use them in combat (but only one attack per model).
So 5 models with melta bombs would mean 5 melta bomb attacks.

I though melta bombs only worked on vehicles...I have no clue then. Will follow this thread as I am curious myself.

What squad has melta bombs though? I thought they were mostly just upgrades on a sergeant type...

The rules for the grenade itself state what they can be used on. Vehicles and Monstrous Creatures mostly.

Imperial Guard Veteran squads is the first unit I can think of. Part of their Demolision upgrade.

i'm not sure. it was some 5 man elder squad. Dire avengers i think. i know they where troops.

Edit: I think they where firedragons as they has S8 Ap1 gun too

In the Eldar codex, only Fire Dragons (an Elite unit) have meltabombs.

As was posted above, per the rulebook, you can't throw meltabombs. You can throw frag and krak, but only one guy per squad in a given shooting phase.

Dark Angels company veterans can each buy melta bombs, as it is effectively a squad of sergeants.

Fire Dragons. They are Elites though, not Troops.

That's pretty bad luck that the Tervigon didn't kill any of them before they attacked.

More likely the Tervie had Crushing Claws, in which case everyone was going at Init 1.

Tervigons are Intiative 1 anyway so....

Just noticed that you're mixing your terms. You THROW grenades (Frag or Krak) in the SHOOTING phase, and are limited to one. In assault, however, every guy who's got grenades or meltabombs can use them; they just get only 1A each, and if using meltabombs, attack at I1.

Vanguard vets as well, as there are quite a few units where everyone can have melta bombs, didnt relise they go at init 1 though so its good to know

Yep, Vanguard Vets, Honour Guard, Death Company, Wolf Guard... the list goes on. Basically any veteran Marine unit that isn't Termies or Sternguard can take 'em.

Blood claws, sky claws, swift claws, wolf scouts, wolf guard. All those units can get melta bombs

I didn't think they were that widespread.

Just checked and blood claws and sky claws can't get Melta bombs anymore, that was the old rules. On a bright note thunder wolf cavalry can carry Melta bombs
