I have the 6th edition rulebook but can't find the rules for "combat patrol". Did GW discontinue the ruleset?

I'm not sure off the back of my hand, but if you wanted to play combat control, just have both you and your opponent limit yourself to the allies FOC (1 HQ, 1 - 2 Troops, 0 - 1 of everything else, no Fortifications) and play on a 4' by 4' board.

If you search for 40k in 40 minutes you may have some luck finding a pdf.

I think Adepticon has some rules too.

Battle missions expansion, several variations on the Kill Team concept that existed back in 4e, and other such documents exist in various places to approximate skirmish games.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Necromunda rules are free too if you want a slightly different squad level game.
