So at Christmas I'm hoping to start a new imperial armour IG army. But which? I LOVE the looks of the Death Korps, literally no army in my opinion can compare to how they look. But they seem to be less competitive than the other choices. As for Elysians, I don't think they look particularly nice, but I love the thought of of fielding an air navy. And as for the Renegades, I'd just use them as regular guard but with the nicer chaos models probs!

So what does dakka think?

Death Korps are a super fun army to play as if you like infantry horde. If you prefer other types of deployment then I'd recommend Elysians or Chaos Renegades instead.

Luckily for you this is one of those rare times when all 3 choices are really great and you won't regret making any one of them.

Elysians know how to party. They spam flyers and win games.

The Renegades and Heretics list that's only the Forgeworld site's got a few issues with it, so in the off chance you want to use that you'll need to find the FAQs. (Mods edit this if points value aren't permissible as these are from an official, if hard to find, FAQ).

*Append Champion/Sergeants (not Chaos Space Marines) options with;
...
- Bolter, 1pt
- Sniper Rifle 5pts

* Champions may take carapace armour for 5pts
* Command Platoons may upgrade Renegades to Veterans for 5pts

*Replace Alpha Legion Squad with Chaos Space Marines Squad from latest Codex

*Minefields, change special rule to; 6 x 40mm bases anywhere outside the enemy's deployment zone. Any unit with 2'' sets off a mine on a 2+. Place a 5'' blast centered on the minefield and treat it as dangerous terrain for the rest of the game.
*In larger games use the minefield stratagem

*Treat Chaos Renegades as Chaos Space Marines for the purpose of allies (though they may be taken as allies by Chaos Space Marines and vice versa).

If you like the DKOK models the most then get those. Models are far more important than the rules, as they are what you are going to be owning in the future. Rules can change and you can use the DKOK models as other Guard forces but the models will always be with you.

Plus, I think DKOK can be quite effective. Nothing can gunline quite like them and they have decent options for pushing forward, with better CC and blobs than regular Guard and nice units like hades.

Plus, they would looks awesome with the new Wall of Martyrs set.

DKoK, and use the models for whatever list/codex you feel gives you the best chance of winning. There's nothing wrong with playing the standard IG codex list with DKoK models, especially since most of the best DKoK units (drills, artillery, etc) can be taken as part of the codex IG list.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

It seems I'll be running death korps! In response to peri, I think I will run them as an Elysian army foremost, but will get plenty of dkok exclusive pieces to run an allied detachment and possibly a pure dkok army when the time comes.

O.o Dkok run as Elysians.

But seriously; the Elysian list is so fun and beastly.

I don't even play IG but I think DKoK look awesome. I was drooling over them on the Forgeworld site while I was looking for Ork Stuff.

Seems like it would be really expensive to field an army of them though.
