Make your own with a large foam board.
You can sculpt whatever terrain you want into it, including trenches, hills, rivers, etc.
Which is awesome.

My vote is also to go for DIY boards. That's what I'm going to do once I get the workspace, tools, time, and money to do so.

Do you have an image of the kind of board you want? Do you have extra money to burn? What about time?

DIY is a lot of fun, if you have a place and time to make one. And there are plenty of articles for building terrain. I made a 4x4 board with some foam from the hardware store, used the same kind of foam for hills, bought some flock for grass and a crap ton of trees from a railroad hobby store. It wasn't too expensive compared to the rest of the things in this hobby.

Make it yourself. That's what my buddy and I are doing. It's not that hard if you browse the net. And if you are lucky enough to have a decent hardware selection it could be less than 20 bucks. I sculpt as a hobby so I am making my own fortresses out of cheap molds, get rocks from outside and glue them onto the board for that "rocky" look. I would advise polishing larger rocks so that models can stand without sliding off. I made all my trees out off excess spruce plastic and a bit of this green stuff I found in my girlfriends art cubby. Also pop cans can, with a knife some paint, and a bit of sand (to ground it) can be turned into a turret tower. Just be creative! Also look up "bases from coconuts, those are really sweet.

The equation is simple :
- if you have money but don't have much time, buy the GW board
- if you don't have money or if you have time to spend, make your own board

I am building mine, but I chose to use modelling flock for the boards.
But, after 6 bags, and counting, I've found that sand, PVA and paint will do the job just as well.
