In short, do they still have a place in a competitive list?

I've just received the Black Templar Venerable Dreadnought from FW. I absolutely love the model, I will paint and definitely play it in fluff armies but otherwise can I find a spot for him in a competitive list?

2 ideas I was thinking:

-Venerable, with tank hunter, TLLC and ML
-Chaplain dreadnought, dual DCCW, HF, Lucius Drop-Pod

What do you guys think? Has anyone used them successfully?

P.S. I'm also working on getting my hands on a Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought.

Since you can get tank hunter I would go for volume of fire where I could. So twin linked auto-cannon and meltagun, maybe in a pod?

Can't do that with standard BT dread, only options are:

Right arm: Assault Cannon, TLLC, or MM

Left arm: DCCW (storm bolter or HF), ML (not TL)

May be upgraded to Venerable (+ tank hunter or furious charge USR).

The Chaplain dread has just about every option possible (including flamestorm cannon), but costs a bit more.

I run a venerable, tank-hunting dreadnought with a TLLC and a Missile Launcher in my Black Templars. He performs pretty well, though he's expensive, somewhat vulnerable to incoming fire, and no good in a melee. I also run a Predator Annihilator with lascannon sponsons, which I think I prefer, at the end of the day. I don't play my Templars much anymore, however, and I don't think they've been out of their case since 5e.

Where can I find rules for the Black Templars Chaplain Dreadnought?

I've been proxying one as a mortis-contemptor and its swung the game for me in the last match, glancing a storm raven to death with all the kheres assault shots in the world (granted the raven was down to two hull points beforehand)

Thanks!

The Chaplain Dreadnought is in Imperial Armour Apocalypse 2 (not second edition, the one before that). It has a specific model from FW but with all the bling on the BT Ven dread from FW I think it fits well as a Chaplain dread.

Gets venerable stats and all kinds of weapon options and it can re-roll to hit in CC.
