I know there are some discussions going on at the moment about which transport case is better, but i'm looking for something really cheap.

I'm relatively new to 40k and i have accumulated a lot of models over a short amount of time. Having said that, i'm near flat broke. I am looking for an extremely cheap and effective way of storing my models and transporting them. If anyone has any companies that they can suggest to me or if they can point me out to a good DIY project that will keep my models safe, please do. I appreciate a lot of feedback.

Let me know what you think,

You're in the US, right? that means you have cheap and easy access to gun cases - I've heard they're insanely cheap at stores like walmart.
Really, nothing beats clever use of those for model storage price-wise if you want something even somewhat sturdy and mobile, those are the way to go (pluckfoam toolcases can, sometimes, be good for bigger stuff as well).
ordering just a pile of cardboard KR cases is the next cheapest (somewhat decent) choice up and it's quite affordable but not gun-case level cheap.

...there is always magnetized bases in steel cases; that can be pretty damn cheap (and awesome, if you have the time to DIY cool cases!)

Go to a store like Target, Lowes, the Home Depot and purchase a plastic storage container and a package of bubble wrap. It should be under $30 and if you decide to upgrade you than have a container for terrain

Another alternative is to grab a cheap carry-on-sized suitcase. Make sure you get one with a front that zips all the way open.

Then find a store that sells cushion foam, and buy a few layers of foam that you can cut holes in for the minis, or some eggshell foam.

Mine travelled from Australia to Chicago and back with no problems.

Gun cases from Wal-Mart or tool boxes with pluck foam from Lowe's or Home Depot (especially during a sale) are all I used back when I was a poor teenager. Hell, I still use a couple of them! They can take a beating and will hold everything a-okay.

^This, or go even cheaper and go to Wal-Mart or local grocery store and ask for free boxes. Go either really late or really early which is when they do most of the stocking.

Egg Cartons or Cheap Foam and a Tool Box....unless you play Dark Eldar...then you are pretty much SOL no matter what.

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

I agree with the above. People in the US have the luxury of being able to walk into a local Walmart or Sporting Goods store and pick up a gun case.

If you want something that holds bits and other things, those same stores will have tackleboxes in the Fishing section.
