purples and blues are quite easy, they cover black very well nontheless...
for pinks, i could advise you to mix the GW base white with the GW base red... should cover fairly well

I've been putting down a flat coat of pure white followed by the actual color. Much more consistent results with more finicky colors, even if it's an extra step.

Generally through building up many thinned layers of colour. Many thinned layers also helps provide a smooth coat, and not end up looking thick with brush strokes.

You can either thin it down and do lots of layers, or you can not thin it and STILL do lots of layers.

The first will take a long time and look good. The second will take a long time and look bad.

The areas with the lighter colors. Put a layer of gray, it covers black well, and then you won't need as many layers. Seen it done with a Imperial fist scheme by Les from awesome paint job. He has some good videos on youtube that could help you out.

See above: it works really well. You can do it with brown as well. Most acromatic colours will work, depending on what you want to put over the top. Good luck!

Yep, as above, but I use denhab(think thats the rightname/spelling, but its from the old paint range, not sure whats its replacement is) stone over black, then the light colour

try starting off with a base or foundation colour (the GW base colours for example) and then get brighter from there.

Example: to paint yellow i start off with a black spray paint, then a coat of the new "Base" yellow (i forget the name). once that is dry i move onto a layer os brighter yellow (either a vallejo colour of the last few bits form my old pot of Badmoon yellow). it will still take a couple of thin layers rather than one thick on though.

I find a layer of a darker 'base' colour works.

I.E - Red then Pink, for a 'cleaner' transition.

Lots and lots thin coats just like all the above said, I also found out for my Black Templars, that laying down a coat of Codex Grey overtop of the black on the shoulderpads, and then following up with a couple thin coats of white really helped the white show properly.

Bleached bone isn't suitable as an intermediate colour. It won't really help you in this regard. I paint bleached bone straight over black for my Deathwing terminators and it takes many thin coats to achieve full coverage.

Even I would be better of using a middle brown (Graveyard Earth perhaps), but I am a sucker for punishment. I suggest you try a layer of grey first, as even some of the GW "Base" colours are too translucent.

Pretty much this, "build up" to the color that you want, gradually adding lighter layers until it is about right.

use the base paints, it's what they were designed for.

the ones youre using are for highlighting, not basecoating over primer.

Yet another technique is to prime in black then prime in white, either by drybrushing the white, or spraying white at the angle of the light.

Or, of course, priming white then...
