Hello again fellow, forumers, hobbyist, and wargamers,

Sorry for the bother (again)!

I was hoping to get some guidance on painting bases for my minis.

I initially wanted to customize my bases from everyday household items, but my progress is slower than expected.

I then decided to purchase GW resin bases and practice painting terrain instead. Is this a better idea/ a good start?

I haven't started yet but I've got some info on how to go about doing it:- I'm looking for a rough, sandy terrain (darker dessert colour perhaps) with grey-ish gravel and rocks (if any)

Ground = Base of Mournfang Brown, Drybrushed with Baneblade Brown + washed with Agrax to bring out the details
Rocks = Base of Stormvermin Fur, Drybrushed with Administratum Grey + washed with Agrax to bring out the details

Does this sound correct to you? Is there a better way to do this?

Once I get started, I'll post shots of my progress!

Dom

Sand + gravel onto PVA = sorted. Don't pay GW prices for basing! ;-)

LOL! I know!

If you look at the pics of my last painting effort, I even converted household stuff to make my flag banner! I'm really resisting paying GW for the bases...

However, I'm thinking of concentrating on actually painting terrain. I was hoping with pre-made bases, I can focus on the painting aspect. Once I get used to it, then I'll be FREE TO EXPERIMENT with different stuff!

Does this make any sense to anyone else but me? :-D

Yeah, I know what you mean. Look on eBay for scenic resin bases, there are some nice, cheapish non-GW ones that will work. Just search the diameter you need.

I think your previous attempts are fine. Maybe just paint the rocks so they are slightly less remininscent of fish tank gravel.

You can easily chew up bits of sprue to make rocks, or just get actual rocks. Also common household items can be repurposed, such as the bottle top I added as a random air vent thingy on one of my HWTs

Hello,

I think you are on the right track. Concentrating on your painting skills and that translates into better basing skills.

Scibor does make some sweet bases..
