I've been contemplating my dark eldar for the past week and is unsure about what I want to take for my heavies, I am for sure taking 2 fliers but not sure if I wanna take rw jet or vr bomber. Was wondering if you guys could shed some wisdom on the two so I can take for competitive play. Thanks.

Quite often the choice of flyer is based on the conundrum of how to deal with enemy flyers.

The Voidraven has those str9 lances - which give you about a 90% change to at least inflict a single glance (70% to pen), up from the 70% the Razorwing gives you (with 50% to pen) with its normal lances. But it lacks missiles to start with, and gets overly expensive when trying to buy the missiles. It's pretty much a dedicated anti-vehicle unit.

The Razorwing comes with four really good missiles by default, so it's a great anti-infantry unit with good anti-armour capability. So it's a generalist.

I think the bigger issue is the Dark Eldar flyers contend with Heavy Support units, so it's tough to get two on the field without sacrificing longer range support from the Ravagers. As a result, they tend to suffer against lists that have two or more flyers, particularly considering the relative fragility of their own flyers and what you pay for them - in my local community at least.

so the VR bomber is a pretty good anti flyer. No flyer has more than AV12, so it basically is a flying rhino with 2 lascannons. Really not great, but serviceable. If you dont need the anti fighter and turn those lances on the ground and you have a ravager, but it costs 50% more than a ravager.

The razorwing fighter with disintigrators and a splintercannon is an awesome bomber firing 2 missiles a turn, it is great anti infantry. still DE dont need too much anti infantry

This has been discussed ad infinitum before, I'd suggest doing a search to see the other threads discuss it at length.

Basically though, razorwing is amazing anti infantry, voidraven is decent anti-tank and anti-flier, with the potential for a turn of amazing anti-infantry.

with the limits on firing 2 missiles a turn, buying 4 missiles is really kinda weak

Voidraven is better IMO with the restriction for 2 missiles per turn. Buy two missiles and go. Come on, shoot the two missiles at inf then strafe the enemy vehicles next turn with the bomb and lances. AV11 is also amazing with hull points no meaning that bolters can take you down. Waiting for DE fliers to get vector dancer.... The nightwing has it, why doesnt the razorwing.

I happen to go with the Voidraven everytime. I feel the slight increase in price is much better for what you get out of it. Usually people run Razorwings stock or add a Flicker or a Cannon if points allow. So here's the tale of the tape:

Razorwing Jetfighter: 145pts

AV 10
2 Darklances (Dessie option for free)
1 TL-Rifle (Cannon option for 10 pts)
4 stock Str 6 AP 5 missile
options for missiles (No Implosion)

Voidraven Bomber: 145pts

AV 11
2 Str 9 AP 2 Lances (No options)
1 shot Str 9 AP 2 small blast
No stock missles

Usual Loadouts:
Razorwing w/ Dessies, Flicker, Cannon, Flicker- 165pts
Sometime no Cannon or Flicker, depends on points for most people

Voidraven w/ x4 Shatterfield missiles, Flicker- 195pts
This is the most common way I see them and this is how I run them, I sometimes throw an implosion on for fun.

So lets compare. For 30 pts more you get +1 to your armor, a Str 9 AP 2 blast, 2 Str9 AP 2 Lances, and 4 Str 7 reroll to wound large blast missiles. i think it is a bargain. the +1 AV is insanely more survivable as you cannot be glanced by Bolters or the like. Also, Necrons are Glancing on 4s instead of 3s, big difference. Str 9 Lances are much better at killing anything with armor than Str 8. The Small Blast is nice as you can Bomb as you comei n and shoot at a different target, oh yeah thats Str 9 AP 2 as well, one shot, but only scatterd D6. The missiles are much better as well. Str 7 and reroll to wound. No AP, but not a big deal. You can hurt vehicles more reliably with Str7 and ensure more woundsare piled on with the reroll.

To me its almost a no brainer. Voidraven does everything better in my opinion, for a slightly higher point cost, but you get much more utility out of it and survivability. I love em, and consistently run two of them in all of my lists.

I'm in 100% agreement with you.

I buy 2 shatterfields, a flickerfield, and call it a day on my Voidravens.

Yea, I guess the VR bomber is a more viable choice for all comers. One question, do you subtract BS for the bomb scatter?

no because the BS reduction on bomb scatter only refers to 2D6 scatter not 1D6. Not sure if this is true, but I was told this by someone and...eh whatever, it still has a good chance of hitting

You do not subtract your BS from the D6 scatter.

But centering it on top of a tank should almost guarantee a hit of some sort, barring a six I believe.
