This is my first time painting Tau. Also, I am relatively new at painting so any C&C is welcome. I will use any advice I get on the next unit. I wont be messing with these guys any more. I think they meet my tabletop quality and I will enjoy playing with them...plus they are just troops so not too important.

To start, the most important figure, the Shas'ui

And the whole squad

Now a link to an imgur album with more photos focusing on my first unit

Looks like you're off to a good start, you have good brush control as evident by the squad marking (took me ages to be able to paint that level of detail). From the first photo though, it looks like the paints are a tad too thick, maybe it'd be worth thinning them down a bit, or applying a lighter colour and then a wash.

Thanks. A friend introduced me to a wet palette this last Saturday and I already see an improvement with paint thinning so hopefully that will show on my next units.

Also in the desert

I like your base job as well. Maybe throw a little dark brown / dark gray around the bottom of the bases too? I think that will make the cool debris and such "pop" a little more.

Very nice!

personally i find little use for wetpallets when painting models unless i am drybrushing (as it doesnt waste 99% of the paint i picked up)

What you should do is thin the bottle itself to milk-like consistency. And believe it or not, use Windex not water. Citadel paints are ammonia based, hence the windex.

In addition to these little critiques I'd add that edge highlights can do wonders! I painted my first Tau squad and liked how they looked, then I highlighted and washed them. I couldn't believe the difference! These guys look very good though!

Very good and accurate brush, Maybe apply a thin wash in the resesses and then drybrush a lighter color on for some highlighting.

Quote from chromedog
and 40k was like McDonalds - you could get it anywhere - it wouldn't necessarily satisfy, but it was probably better than nothing.

A nice wash will take these guys to the next level with very very little work. I love Tau, if I didn't have tons of smurfs to paint i'd grab a few of them to start on

The colors are good, but for me there's too much red. Either a black wash to get in the cracks or give it a camo appearance with another color.

Great start, I would like to see a little more highlighting to add depth though, just a thought.

Very Nice brushwork, I like to see tau with a unique color scheme that's different from the Vanilla armour a lot of them have.

WAAAGH!!!
