Let's face it, bikes look cooler on without their bases. So my question is, do think players should be required to field bikes on their bases or not?

Yes. They're provided with one, it normalizes their base and they are not vehicles.

Does this mean Dreadnoughts are not required to have a base because they are a vehicle and the inverse of what you say should be true? lol

Also I don't recall my bikes coming with bases, I know the new ones do but I don't remember seeing bases in the old kit. I'm pretty sure my old Attack bike never had one too.

I'm pretty sure that it says in the rulebook that all models have to be based on the base they came with (or same size if you go 3rd party). So I GUESS if you have one of the old school dreads that didnt have bases technically you dont have to put it on one. But I wouldnt expect that to fly with anyone in real life.

lol I jokingly ment that the inverse of the statement that the bikes need bases to "And they are not vehicles", which I gathered ment to clarify they are not vehicles. So the inverse must be true that all vehicles must have no base to clarify they are vehicles. It was a joke more than anything else.

However I was not joking about my older bikes, I really don't remember them coming with bases and the attack bike I'm almost sure never had one. I know the newer kits of bikes and attack bikes have bases but I'm fairly sure the older ones did not. Thus as they were not provided with one they are legal without a base.

I've been playing over 10 years and as far as I can remember, all my bikes have come with bases.

I would say you must field your bikes on bases.

This as well. Even when they were the old Fantasy cav bases, my bikes all came with bases.

Most of my bikes and dreads came with bases, so I use them, and having them on bases is really handy.

Attack bikes don't have bases, but I simply applied a dreadnought base and achieved victory.

Thanks for the insight, I'll be fielding my bikes with bases from now on!

Funny thing about this thread. For a while, GW supported running them with out base to point of showing you how to peg the base so that they would stand up without the base. Also happens to be how the official models were done up to atleast 5th as sit here looking at the back of my bike box.

Bases are a funny thing. The rules are clear in that you should always use the base provided with the model, but many models are provided with different sized bases at different points of their existence (or even at the same time!). If you decide to keep your bikes unbased because that's what they came with, then good luck finding rules for defining base contact

Personally, I prefer to keep everything consistent, so I always use the most recent "accepted" base for every unit. My old school terminators are all on 40mm bases, and my bikes are all on the rounded bike bases, for example. It's not perfectly RAW, but it looks better than having so many mismatched bases, and literally no opponents of mine have had a problem with it. I've even made 5" round bases for my Defilers, as having a base solves so many problems of practicality.

Not all bikes come with bases.

The Ork ones don't AFAIK. I based all mine on 40k rounded bike bases, because i think they ought to be based, but they don't come with them.

CSM ones come with the square cavalry base (at least the ones on the website do.)

SM scout and regular bikes come with bases, but the atttack bike does not.

Jetbikes all do, but the sizes differ. DE bikes are on a small flight stand, Eldar are on a vehicle flight stand, as are Ork Deffkoptas.

There isn't really a standard. If it comes with a base, base it on that. If not it's down to your own taste.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I have a similar question on bases and didn't want to start a new one.
Would a large 60mm round base be legal? Because on the GW website the bases are marked as 25mm, 40mm and 60mm, but the 60mm base is actually 64mm at the bottom and 60mm at the top. Would in this case a base that is exactly 60mm on both top and bottom be legal?

If it's not the base that is supplied with the model, then no, technically it's not legal.

In actual practice, though, most people won't care what size base you use so long as it looks appropriate to the model.

Good for you then.

Mine didn't :(

They are not shown as based in the codex, nor listed as including a base on the website. I just like mone with a base.

It's a bit like the Monolith. Sometimes you got a base in the kit, sometimes not. GW seemed to change their mind regularly on that,,
