Just to elaborate on the title, why do chaos space marines have some of the new armour patterns? I'm not talking about the the freshly rebelled ones, but the legions. Do they produce it themselves? Do they loot it? Just wondering if anyone knew . (Also, i don't have access to the new codex, so it could be in there)

I'd appreciate any replies.

I think they loot forge worlds and make their own.

They have their own mechanicus !?

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Battlefield salvage.

And, also, because it's entirely likely that even the original Legions are mostly comprised of "new" recruits, the actual Heresy era veterans having been killed and replaced over the last 10,000 years.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Power armour of all marks is composed of interchangeable parts. Take a look at vanilla marines, there is no uniform armour style, you have MK 6 legs, with MK 7 bodies and MK 6 helmets, with some MK 8 parts thrown in. So its very possible that a chaos marine could have his armour damaged to such a degree that he has to discard a piece, and simply strip the corpse of a loyalist marine hes just killed to replace it.

Also bear in mind that Mk 7 armour was developed during the horus heresy, so the traitor legions would have had (limited) access to it when they took mars, so even the 'modern' suits of power armour are a design thats 10,000 years old. its highly likely that after the defeat of horus during the battle of terra, the traitor legions took the design with them when they retreated, and have been manufacturing it ever since

They also have their own versions of Forge Worlds.
Where did you think daemon engines come from?

Successful CSM warbands/armies have access to their own Forge Worlds and production centers, usually manned by either slaves or the Dark Mechanicus. Places in the Eye of Terror like Xana II basically will make you anything you want as long as you give them enough slaves.

2,700pts
2,000pts

I've always kinda wondered about that. The trade the equipment for the materials required to make the equipment, which leaves them with a net gain of... what? Even if they end up with a surplus of materials and slaves, what do they do with it besides invest in more construction facilities? Are there Dark Techpriests just sitting there in front of their Power Armor Pants factory, eagerly watching slaves and metal flow in at one end and Power Armor out the other cackling to themselves "Yes, more slaves, more metal! We will make pants! I love making pants! AHahahahahahaha! Make more!"

Half the Mechanicus went with them during the Heresy, the eye of Terror has its own Forgeworlds.

Don't forget, the universe is a big place. Looting, pillaging, and second hand copies aren't the only ways to get your equipment or anything you might want. I would imagine the black market in the 40k universe is extremely profitable.

Unlikely that imperials trade with chaos even on he black markets.

After all, they are just as likely to kill you and take whatever it is you are selling.

Black markets require a degree of trust between the two parties that both benefit more from the trade then they would from fighting.

The Dark Mechanicus want to

A.) Create and experiment with new radical weaponry, they need slaves to do it and need battlefields to test it out on. CSM provide both
2.) Destroy the loyalist Mechanicus. CSM can do that.

Well, if Imperial authority is willing to do trade with a certain faction, then it wouldn't really be black market would it? It would be called regular trade.

well the dark mechanicus(fully half of the technopriests of the 31st millenium) are an incredibly varied bunch. I bet some of them just want to build unorthodox "plaques with fish that sing" but these are weak and probably got enslaved by some CSM or other Dark Magi to build weapons. Some dark magi want to build radical new weaponry, they have power and might even have some power over CSM.

They all want things, not nessisarilly money but knowledge, and if that knowledge happens to be on an IoM world they are going to find a way to get it.

Because not all chaos marines turned during the heresy. An ultramarine in mk 8 armor could still turn to one of the gods.
