Subject: How Exactly do the C`tan Feed?

Hi everyone just wondering how the Necrons feed the Ctan. I know that they love to eat the electromagnetic pulse of living beings over stars but when the Necrons emerge from a world and they begin their harvest killing how do they feed their masters?
PS I made this account a long time ago and forgot about it and didn't use it much but I guess my interest in Warhammer has been rekindled. Emperor forgive me if this in the wrong section.

Maybe Chaos Daemons are so angry all the time because despite their near infinite intelligence they can't seem to forge anything more complex than a sword, an axe, or a staff |

The fluff has changed, and now the C'tan are slaves to the Necrons, but back when they were fed, it didn't go into too much detail. I assume they just pulled the energy into them.

Yeah, Newcrons retconned a massive amount of cronny fluff.
C'tan are captured 'shards' now. Kinda like Pokemon.
You let em out and fight some folk, then put it back in its ball.
But from what I recall, they fed by 'touching' the energy field of whatever it was, and absorbed it via a sort of space-osmosis.

Yeah but if the Necrons kill doesn't that defeat the purpose of harvesting life? Can't really call it life when its dead. This bit of fluff always confused me.

The c'tan have already fed. They fed on the souls of the necrontyr when they first turned them to the necron. It was only afterwards that they became shards.

The C'Tan are energy based beings. They interact with and manipulate energy directly, so they can just reach in and pluck out a soul, syphoning it directly.
They don't need to touch you, or make physical contact, they just have to be close enough to overcome the natural energy gradients that keep your soul anchored to yourself.
It was hinted in the early fluff however that tomb ships and some necron cruisers had devices which amplified this affect and created the nightmare shrouds.
