Okay so I'm still pretty new, and so is my friend that I play with, so be nice.
I play 'Nids, and he plays Necrons, we have some very interesting games, lately, an issue has come up, and we are both a bit confused.
I have a unit of Swarmlord, Tyranid Prime, and a Tyrant Guard, The Prime has boneswords, and rending claws. I assualted into a group of warriors with this unit, everything went as usual, swarmlord roflrolled through a bunch of warriors, then I went to roll for the tyranid prime. I picked up two dice and said to my friend, these are for his boneswords, then picked a set of different colored dice, and proclaimed that these are for his rending claws. He then told me, that I can pick one characteristic from either weapon and apply it to all the attacks, so obviously I chose boneswords, umm his squad was owned.
So, which is it, do I go indivuidually for each weapon, or do they all get one characteristic of either? I'm a bit confused. We couldn't find specifics in the rule book.
Thanks.

The rule you're looking for is More than One Weapon on page 51 of the BRB.
I'm not sure if rending claws are a work-around to this by causing the model to gain the Rending USR, or that might just be me miss-reading the entry (hint: I'm probably wrong).

Read page 33 of your Codex. All attacks from a Tyranid benefit from all close combat biomorphs. All 4 attacks would be Rending Boneswords.

I don't know why you are running boneswords and rending claws, boneswords ignore armour anyway...

To kill armor. Or if you're confused about the rule as the OP was.

I find that SMASH does a great job of it.

I find that Zoanthropes or Hive guard do a good job of armour. Primes are not meant for armour imo. I know my Nids like the back of my hand, so I don't usually get confused about said rules.

i'm not sure I can swap out the scything talons for another set of boneswords am i? *reads rule again* Not really sure if I am allowed to say, but I can only replace the the deathspitter with 4 different things as outlined on pg 87 of the nid codex. And it specifies I can't replace the, replaced scything talons with anything. So the natural conclusion is to get rending claws, at least for me. Either that, or scything talons, and reroll all my 1s, even the swords, as someone explained.

Just keep the standard scything talons with your boneswords. Re-rolling ones is better than paying for something that isn't going to do much unless you get close to a vehicle.

thanks for your input, many times I have assaulted a vehicle with this unit, and have done very well. I like the scything talons idea though. Re-rolls have saved my skin many times. I just want to know how I would roll for it, and what properties do I get. I've looked at the pages in question in my rulebooks, reread the rules a few times, and I'm still confused. On one page it tells me that I may chose one set of weapons, use that property and then add a +1 for the extra set. So I would roll a total of 4 dice for the Tyranid Prime? Then my codex tells me, all Tyranid creatures do not get bonuses for having more than one set of weapons, and fight based on their attack profiles. in which case, the above statement is false. So in an assault (where I have boneswords equipped, and scything talons) I would roll 3 dice, and they would all be 'bonesword effect profile' and I can re-roll 1's?

I don't have my codex with atm, but I believe it is 3 dice and re-rolling ones with the bonesword's ignore armour rules. I'm not sure though.

Tyranid prime your receive 4 attacks at base. 5 attacks on charge. The attacks would get the bonus from BOTH of your CC weapons. It would ignore armor and potentially inflict ID as per Bonesword rules and you would be allowed to reroll 1s if you had scything talons.
Tyrands never get the bonus attack for multiple weapons. we combine CC abilities to make up for this fact.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't too sure myself there as I have no codex.

Your so useless dude
But yes, to the OP, Nids make all their attacks using both weapons. We don't get any bonuses for having 2 weapons though, but i don't mind. 6 attacks base with a trygon keeps me happy with this.
Also means that Carnifexes can take Crushing Claws and Talons so that they get +d3 and rerolls ones!

My opponents may ask, and backing it up with a "well someone on a forums said..." doesn't work so great.

The rule that takes away bonus attacks is on pg 33 of the codex. The ability to stack CC abilities is in the FAQ PG 5 of the tyranid section right hand side 4th question from the top. Thats the GW FAQ

Because Rending causes a wound regardless of Toughness? The only benefits of running bs/ rc combo is to take on vehicles/high toughness models.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Bring in the toxin sacs then...
10 points for a 4+ instead of a 6. And a reroll on toughness 5 or lower.
But as i think it's been said... Don't send a prime to do a mc's job.... That's just wasted potential...
I sit primes at the back with 2 tyrannofexes and 3 biovores. Lovely little babysitter for the "artillery"

The Prime can make that a seriously tough deathstar, just by getting the Swarmlord Iron Arm.
