Hi guys.

I am looking for an airbrushing kit. I would like to know what do you use, and what do you recommand as equipment. I am looking for good quality, but not overpricing too.

Thanks !

if you want good quality get the cheapest compressor that you can find that has a moisture filter and an airtank and get a starter airbrush from iwata, badger or harder & steenbeck... i got the last and its treating me very wel but i hear its not as easily available on your side of the ocean...
get a blow out / cleaning pot and a spraybooth or a spray mask with good filters...

i guess if you have all that you will be 250 dollar lighter but you will have a pretty good set up

There are LITERALLY HUNDREDS of posts on this topic - about one every 10 days. Do a search, you will find a wealth of information on it.

(with tons of details and justifications etc.).

If you want an executive summary:

Get any dual action gravity feed brush - even a cheap one that meets those specs will last you a long time skill wise.

Compressors - get a moisture trap, and a way to adjust pressure. The cheaper the compressor, the louder it is (usually).

If you have access to harbor freight (I don't think they are in CA) they have a decent starter kit for $90 usd.

(on you tube look up: awesomepaintjob.com - he has tons of great vids).

Best of luck and welcome to the world of airbrushing!!!

Thanks for your help.

Do you use GW citadel paints, or do you have to use specific ones ?

seconded! i got a cheap compressor with airtank and moisture trap a year ago, still serving my needs perfectly!
Got myself a cheap 'chinese' airbrush as well, which was good to learn the ropes, but after a while you really want an upgrade. The brands DijnsK mentioned should serve you well! I'm treating myself to a Harder & Steenbeck airbrush for christmas
I'd recommend getting a gravity-fed dual action airbrush. The siphon feed airbrushes aren't perfect for small 40kish work, as you'd be wasting a lot of paint in the pot and the siphon (in my experience ) good luck!

edit: about paints, the GW ones have worked okay for me, though I find vallejo to be easier to work with (seem a bit better to me, and the dropper bottles are very handy when airbrushing)

First off, I am excited for you as airbrushing is a whole new level in the hobby - it will inspire you to try new things and have fun with new equipment and techniques.

Secondly, do a search on "airbrush paints" - like airbrushing in general, there are tons of posts on it.
I also suggest the video channels of awesomepaint job, and buy painted.

for an executive summary:

You can thin almost ANY paint to use in an airbrush - however, some have mixed results.
(hobby paint thins better than say the cheap craft store paint).
You can thin most paints with water, but some people use either windex or alcohol (a couple of paints don't like alcohol, always test).
I personally prefer "airbrush medium" - it is worth every single penny! (or pence?). I like the "golden" brand, but this is subjective.

Paints: I prefer airbrush paints - finer pigments, better coverage, most can be brush applied, and you don't have to thin them.

IN this order;
Golden brand artist quality - limited colors, but excellent paints.
Vallejo model air - excellent.
Createx airbrush paints.
Aztek brand.
Thinning other paints.

As far as how much you thin, etc. there are tons of posts on this, but it is INCREDIBLY subjective to the specific paint, brush and pressure - many use the (also subjective) rule of "the consistency of skim milk".
The real answer is: until it sprays well and gives decent coverage.

This requires a lot of experimentation - and in airbrushing, like many other hobbies - experience is the key - so try things.

best of luck.

I picked myself up a great airbrush and compressor for around $200. Well, £130 for me.

It's a Sparmax SP35 double-action airbrush (identical to Iwata, same company apparently) and an AS196 twin cylinder, 3.0 litre airtank compressor - with moisture trap and pressure control.

It's a great setup, especially for a beginner.
