I'm only playing against my friend right now, and we're escalating up in points by 250 each time. Next game will be at 1k. I played a hybrid infantry/mech list at 750 with a Demolisher and a LRBT with a bunch of vanilla infantry blobs (just flamers) to mass out the rest (CCS in chimera with 4 meltas). The infantry got slaughtered by tesla and did little damage, and I couldn't see how to get them into range to actually do anything useful without getting torn up. The tanks were MVPs for sure. He won due to first blood as we split objectives, and it was a really fun game. Still, I'm up for improving my list for 1k, as he will be doing the same.

I don't want to go full mechvet, as I really like the idea of having that scary amount of bodies on the table. Still, we both agreed to start breaking out flyers when we hit 1k, so I'm going to add a Vendetta, and I'm pretty sure his scythe is going to chop up my vanilla guardsmen even worse than he did last time.

Can I even do a hybrid list at 1k? Any advice on selection? Also any advice on general tactics to avoid getting electrified the moment I get into my own firing range with my infantry?

I won't be going for a WAAC approach in the end and really don't want to try and specifically tailor too hard, but I'm definitely interested in hearing ideas just to get a better feel of how things work and what's effective/ineffective.

Guard can't do Hybrid well.

Pick Mech or Foot. Both are very fun, and competitive, but when you start splitting, you make target-priority incredibly easy for your opponent.

Once you specialize your list into something more cohesive and effective, we can give advice based on the playstyle you choose.

Hmm. Fair enough. I'm just having trouble deciding yet, but I guess I'm leaning towards mech. Would be easier to paint anyway.

Supposing I went for infantry based, how do you actually get your infantry into range without getting absolutely wrecked by tesla fire? It just seems like the 24" range on both sides spells death.

If you go infantry pack a ton I heavy weapons teams. Combined with orders they can be pretty awsome vrs anything. Probably best to go auto cannons and lazcannons. Focusing more on the auto cannons. A demolisher might also find respectable use. Or, just a normal pair of lrbt. Battle cannons are fun.

Necrons can be IG's worst match up some times:
Tesla goes nuts on blobs of infantry.
Gauss shreds mech apart like tissue paper.
...
maybe try out gunning him from a distance more than 24"?
(though, if he's gonna be bringing flyers next game, this might not mean much, as he'll probably just sic Doomscythes on anything threatening, and send Nightscythes in to mop up the rest...)

The only problem I have with the demolisher, is that with its 24" range, it may only get to fire one shot before it gets glanced to death by gauss weapons. With necrons you want to keep your tanks far far away.

Consider changing it to 2x regular LRBT. As AP3 is enough to ignore armor saves. Place them in cover as far away as you can, and just lob shots over the table.

Use the infantry as screens for the tanks, and to deny movement to the flyers. Try to put them in cover if you can. Also, putting autocannons in the infantry list, and issuing BID to them might help against taking out flyers.

I've found so far that there is only one balm that works to cure necronitis: lascannons.

As you already noticed, necron stuff will shred you at close range. Lascannons have a long reach. As you have undoubtedly already discovered, HP4 AV13 vehicles are really tough. The only way to handle them is to strip them of their quantum shielding. Lascannons are good at causing penetrating hits. Also, most necron vehicles are open-topped, which gels very, very nicely with the Ap2.

They also deny armor saves to overlords, and, when you manage a hit, are pretty good at swatting down fliers. Put another way, lascannons are good against basically everything in the necron codex, while there are a few things that are basically only solvable by lascannons (or their equvalents, like medusas).

As such, I'd start by breaking out a bunch of lascannons for your vets or infantry squads, and invest in some hull lascannons and sponson multimeltas for your russes. Should make things easier on you.

The answer is more Vendettas.

I didn't really bother reading the question, but I'm pretty sure the answer is more Vendettas.

Isn't it always?

(Except when the answer is "Vulture with Punisher cannons.")

manticores will ruin a necron players day. multiple large blasts have a decent chance of wiping out a squad and the S10 means you can pen anything short of a monolith on a 4+.

oh, and their range is ridonkulous.

oh, and they can shoot without LOS

i hate manticores.

Umm...

"How do I make sure I don't have too many vendettas in my list?"

"My faith tells me that I can't use the cursed letter that falls between U and W. What guard units don't have that letter in their name?"

"My father was killed in a blood-feud with the neighboring kin. What units have a name that doesn't have anything to do with revenge killing?"

I could go on.

I still think, as a guard player, I'd be remiss if I didn't answer all those quandries with "More Vendettas."
